My direct maternal grandfather was born here on 17 March 1935. He grew up in Tanjong Malim, Perak with his 8 siblings in the house behind the sign.As time passed, he got a job with the Singapore Police Force back in the day, a few years after WWII. From humble beginnings as a traffic police officer, he rose up the ranks to become a sharpshooter and personal bodyguard to one of the Singapore ministers. It was also in Singapore where he met my grandmother, a diligent and resilient young nurse in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) at the time. Thus, forming the tale of forever between 'The Protector and The Healer' from 1964 onwards. However 12 years later, an accident befell upon him which left him in critical care and condition...just as he was returning home from work with food for the family. Despite the horrific news, my grandmother with all her strength stepped up as the sole caregiver and became the main parent for their children. The 'Protector and Healer' from that moment onwards. The grit and determination to care for and support him always even though he will never be the same as he once was. Always by his side.Alas, forever permanently took a different turn for the day came when my grandfather took his last breath on 4 November 2003 in SGH. The stated minister above even attended my grandfather's funeral when he passed away. Both my grandfather and grandmother truly a testament to the name Kubu (fort/stronghold/bastion/defence).Fast forward to the present, it was surreal to return for a visit here especially now as an adult during December 2023 compared back when I was a mere pre-schooler in nursery visiting for the very first time. It is still sad to know that my first time here, was also the very last time my grandfather returned home to his birthplace and childhood homeland.Al-Fatihah to both Allahyarham Haji Roslan Bin Ahmad Napis and Allahyarham Hajjah Amnah Binte Harith. May they rest in peace, be united together forever once more and be placed among the pious and highest ranks in Jannah. Amin. - N. Jannah

Kampung Kubu Introduce

For those of us living in Perak, especially in the charming town of Tanjong Malim, there's a unique connection to the past that often goes unnoticed by the casual observer. Tucked away on Jalan Haji Mustafa Raja Kamala, you'll find a place known as Kampung Kubu. More than just an address, Kampung Kubu is a historical landmark that carries the echoes of a bygone era, a place steeped in local lore and personal narratives that shaped the very fabric of this community. It’s a site that, despite its modest appearance, holds significant historical weight, offering a fascinating glimpse into the origins and defensive spirit of Tanjong Malim.

The name "Kubu" itself is profoundly meaningful, translating to "fort," "stronghold," "bastion," or "defence." This nomenclature speaks volumes about the historical role of this area. Legend has it that Kampung Kubu served as a vital fortress, a strategic defensive position against rival clans from other riverbanks or from Hulu Selangor. This historical context paints a vivid picture of a time when communities needed to protect themselves, and this very spot stood as their bulwark. While much of the physical evidence of its past as a formidable fortress has faded with time, the essence of its protective spirit remains embedded in the local consciousness. Today, Kampung Kubu serves as a quiet reminder of Tanjong Malim's resilience and the determination of its early inhabitants. It’s an understated yet profoundly significant site, inviting locals and history enthusiasts to connect with the deep roots of their heritage. It stands as the only dedicated historical information site within Tanjong Malim's old town, making it a crucial reference point for understanding the area's rich past.

Location and Accessibility

Kampung Kubu is conveniently located at NO.25, JALAN DAUGLAS, Jalan Haji Mustafa Raja Kamala, 35900 Tanjong Malim, Perak, Malaysia. Its central location within Tanjong Malim's old town makes it highly accessible for residents of Perak and those visiting the town.

Reaching Kampung Kubu is relatively straightforward for locals. If you're driving, it's easily navigable using GPS or local directions, as it's situated in an established part of Tanjong Malim. Street parking might be available in the vicinity, though visitors should be mindful of local parking regulations. For those relying on public transport, Tanjong Malim has a KTM Komuter station, which connects to various towns in Perak and beyond. From the KTM station, Kampung Kubu would be a short taxi, e-hailing service, or possibly even a walk away, depending on your preference and the exact distance. Its position within the older, more traditional part of Tanjong Malim also means it's often within walking distance of other local amenities and eateries, allowing for a pleasant stroll through the historic streets. The ease of access ensures that this important historical landmark is readily available for all locals to explore and learn from.

Services Offered

As a historical landmark primarily serving as an interpretive site rather than a commercial establishment, Kampung Kubu offers informational and commemorative services designed to educate visitors about its past. These include:

  • Information Boards: The site features several introduction boards that provide historical context about Kampung Kubu itself, detailing its significance as a former defensive stronghold. These boards explain the history of the area and the "generation warrior house" that, impressively, still exists today, linking the past to the present.
  • Replicas and Artifacts (External): While the original weapons and significant artifacts from its "fortress" days are now housed in places like the UPSI Museum or kept by descendants of the original families, the site does feature a replica cannon. This replica, along with the information boards, helps visitors visualize the area's defensive past.
  • Commemorative Space: The site serves as a place for remembrance and reflection on the lives and struggles of the past inhabitants, especially the warrior generations linked to its "fortress" history.
  • Heritage Preservation: Although seemingly modest, the continued existence of this designated historical site, even with limited physical remnants, plays a crucial role in preserving local heritage and ensuring that the stories of Tanjong Malim's origins are not forgotten.

It's important for visitors to manage their expectations regarding "services" here. This is not a museum with guides or extensive facilities, but rather an open-air historical information point designed for self-guided exploration and contemplation.

Features and Highlights

While Kampung Kubu might appear understated at first glance, its true highlights lie in the stories it tells and the historical significance it represents:

  • The "Fortress" Origin: The most compelling feature is the very concept of Kampung Kubu as a former "fortress" or defensive stronghold. This history of protection against rival clans or external threats provides a fascinating backdrop to the area's past. The name "Kubu" itself, meaning fort, is a powerful reminder of this crucial role.
  • Information Boards: The presence of detailed information boards is a key highlight, as they are the primary source of historical context available directly at the site. These boards allow visitors to independently learn about the area's history, including its function as a defense point and the stories of the warrior generations.
  • The Existing "Warrior House": The fact that the "generation warrior house" (rumah generasi pejuang) still stands behind the main sign, as mentioned in local accounts, is a significant and tangible link to the past. While not always accessible to the public, its presence underscores the site's authenticity and connection to historical families.
  • Replica Cannon and Old Surau: The replica cannon, though not original, serves as a visual aid to imagine the defensive nature of the site. Nearby, the presence of an abandoned old Surau (prayer house) also adds to the historical ambiance, hinting at the community life that once thrived here.
  • Sense of Local Heritage: For locals, visiting Kampung Kubu provides a profound sense of connection to their roots. It's a place where personal family histories, like the one shared by a customer whose grandfather was born there, intertwine with the broader narrative of Tanjong Malim's development. This provides a unique, intimate highlight for many.
  • Quiet Reflection: Unlike bustling tourist attractions, Kampung Kubu offers a quiet space for reflection. It allows visitors to absorb the historical information and ponder the lives of those who came before, offering a moment of peaceful contemplation.
  • Only Dedicated Historical Site in Tanjong Malim Old Town: This unique distinction makes Kampung Kubu a crucial focal point for anyone interested in the local history of Tanjong Malim.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a historical landmark and an open public space, Kampung Kubu does not have any commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, such as discounted entry fees or loyalty programs. Access to the site and its information boards is free for all visitors.

However, the "special offer" of Kampung Kubu lies in its unique value as a free, accessible historical resource. It offers the chance to engage directly with Tanjong Malim's past without any cost, providing invaluable educational and cultural enrichment. Occasionally, local historical societies, community groups, or educational institutions might organize guided tours or heritage walks that include Kampung Kubu as a stop. While these might sometimes have a small participation fee, they are community-driven initiatives rather than commercial promotions by the site itself. Locals interested in deeper engagement with Tanjong Malim's history should look out for announcements from these local organizations, as they would provide an enhanced experience of the site.
