From leisurely strolls along the shore to exhilarating kite-flying sessions and indulging in fresh local delicacies, Pantai Cahaya Bulan offers a unique blend of activities and an atmosphere that truly captures the essence of our beautiful state. It's more than just a beach; it's a community hub where memories are made and cherished.
Pantai Cahaya Bulan is conveniently located in Kelantan, Malaysia, making it easily accessible for those residing in or visiting Kota Bharu. Specifically, you can find this charming beach at Pantai Cahaya Bulan, 15350, Kelantan, Malaysia.
The beach is situated just a short drive from Kota Bharu city center, approximately 10 kilometers away. This close proximity makes it an ideal spot for a quick weekend escape or a relaxing afternoon outing without having to venture too far from urban conveniences. The journey to Pantai Cahaya Bulan often takes you through picturesque local villages, offering a glimpse into the traditional Kelantanese way of life before you even reach the sandy shores. Local transportation, including taxis and ride-sharing services, can easily take you to the beach. For those driving, ample parking is generally available, especially during weekdays, though it can get busy on weekends and public holidays.
Pantai Cahaya Bulan and its surrounding area offer a variety of services to enhance your visit, catering to diverse needs and ensuring a comfortable experience.
- Food Stalls and Restaurants: The beach is well-known for its numerous food stalls and eateries lining the shore. These stalls offer a delightful array of local seafood and traditional Kelantanese delicacies, providing a true taste of the region. You can find everything from fresh seafood celup tepung (battered and fried seafood) to keropok lekor (fish crackers), satar, miang pla, and refreshing coconut drinks. Some more established restaurants also offer a wider menu, including Western and Arabic food, providing a diverse dining experience.
- Kite Sales and Supplies: Given its reputation as a popular spot for kite flying, you'll find vendors selling a variety of colorful kites, including the iconic Wau Bulan (moon kite). This means you don't need to bring your own to enjoy this popular activity.
- Accommodation Options: For those looking to extend their stay, there are several chalets, resorts, and guesthouses located near Pantai Cahaya Bulan. These accommodations range from budget-friendly options to more comfortable resorts, many offering beachfront access or views.
- Public Facilities: Visitors can make use of public toilets and prayer rooms (surau) available at the beach, ensuring convenience during your visit.
- Parking: Dedicated parking areas are provided for visitors, though as mentioned, these can fill up quickly during peak hours.
- Recreational Activities: While not formal services, the presence of open spaces and the gentle sea breeze facilitate activities like picnicking, beach volleyball, and sand play for children. Some resorts in the area may also offer water sports (though swimming directly in the open sea at Pantai Cahaya Bulan is often discouraged due to strong currents, especially during monsoon season).
Pantai Cahaya Bulan boasts several unique features and highlights that make it a cherished destination for locals and a fascinating spot for those new to Kelantan.
- Kite Flying Haven: The open expanse and consistent sea breeze at Pantai Cahaya Bulan make it an ideal location for kite flying. You’ll often see a sky dotted with colorful kites, particularly the traditional Wau Bulan, a symbol of Kelantan's rich cultural heritage. This activity is a favorite among families and creates a lively, picturesque atmosphere.
- Culinary Delights by the Sea: One of the biggest draws of PCB is its vibrant food scene. The stretch of beach is lined with numerous food stalls offering an authentic taste of Kelantanese street food and fresh seafood. Visitors can enjoy freshly prepared udang celup tepung (battered prawns), various fish and squid dishes, and local snacks while enjoying the sea breeze.
- Scenic Views and Sunsets: Despite some changes to the shoreline due to natural erosion, Pantai Cahaya Bulan still offers breathtaking views of the South China Sea. It's particularly renowned for its stunning sunsets, painting the sky with vibrant hues and creating a tranquil setting perfect for photography and quiet contemplation.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The beach is a popular spot for families to gather for picnics and leisure. The relatively calm environment (though swimming in the open sea is not always advisable due to currents) allows children to play safely in the sand, making it an excellent choice for a family day out.
- Historical Significance: Pantai Cahaya Bulan has an interesting history, having been formerly known as Pantai Cinta Berahi, or "Beach of Passionate Love." This older name, reputedly given by a British soldier during World War II, reflects a romantic past before the name was changed to align with local sensibilities. This historical tidbit adds a layer of intrigue to the beach's identity.
- Proximity to Traditional Crafts: Along the road leading to Pantai Cahaya Bulan, you can often find cottage industries showcasing Kelantan’s rich heritage, including batik prints, songket weaving, and traditional handicrafts. This offers an opportunity to explore the local culture beyond just the beach.
While Pantai Cahaya Bulan itself does not typically offer direct promotions as a public beach, many of the surrounding resorts, chalets, and food vendors in the area frequently have special offers. To find the best deals for your visit, it's advisable to:
- Check Hotel and Resort Websites: Accommodation providers such as PCB Beach Resort, OYO chalets, and other guesthouses often run seasonal promotions or discounts on their official websites or through popular booking platforms like Agoda and Traveloka. These might include reduced room rates, package deals with meals, or extended stay discounts.
- Look for Local Food Stall Deals: Some food stalls might offer set menus or special prices for certain seafood combinations, especially during off-peak hours or for larger groups. It’s always a good idea to ask about any ongoing promotions directly when you visit.
- Monitor Tourism Websites: Keep an eye on local Kelantan tourism websites or social media pages, as they sometimes highlight special events or promotions happening in the Pantai Cahaya Bulan area.

Pantai Cahaya Bulan Reviews
A lot has changed here since my last visit back in 2003, so that’s 21 years ago! More organized and more tourists friendly. Just need to make sure people throw their rubbish away properly!
Jan 01, 2025 · Shidah AliNature Vs Man.The beach suffered so much erosion from the monsoon season, and it is now so different from its former self. A real pity as this beach used to be one of the famous ones during its hay days.Nice place to do some kite flying, and the place is lined with small food stalls selling local seafood and delicacies.
Feb 11, 2024 · Guanny GThe second time I came to this beach, it happened to be sunset. Many locals come here to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. There are also some stalls selling toys or kites. There are also some Malay food stalls opposite, you can go there to eat when you are hungry. But the public toilet there is far away, and there seems to be only one, and it charges RM0.50.If you like cats, you can also come here. There are many cats here, and they are not afraid of people, just waiting for you to play with them.

Its name, which translates to "Moonlight Beach," reflects the area's tranquil and picturesque environment. The beach offers a long stretch of golden sand and is ideal for relaxing, picnicking, and enjoying the sunset. Visitors can also experience local food stalls and amenities nearby. The beach is a favored spot for both locals and tourists looking for a peaceful retreat from city life.
Aug 30, 2024 · Mohammad Shahadat HossenEmbarking on a weekend getaway to Kota Bharu, my wife, two friends, and I decided to unwind with an evening stroll at Pantai Cahaya Bulan. A scenic half-hour drive from our hotel in Kota Bharu brought us to this popular beach destination. The beach was abuzz with locals, and an array of food and toy vendors lined the shore. Stalls offering local dishes and batik merchandise dotted the promenade, creating a lively atmosphere. Along the beachfront, we discovered restaurants catering to various tastes. However, the overall cleanliness of the beach left something to be desired, with scattered trash marring the natural beauty. It is my hope that visitors will collectively contribute to maintaining the hygiene of this area. One notable aspect was the prevalence of stray cats, some appearing healthy while others seemed in need. Cat enthusiasts may find joy in their presence, but for others, it could be a mixed experience. The moonlit evening cast a beautiful reflection upon the sea, adding a touch of enchantment to the ambiance. While the beach lacks the infrastructure of prominent hotels, its natural charm and local vibrancy make it a worthwhile visit for those seeking a genuine experience.
