Bukit Kwong, a name that resonates with nature enthusiasts and local adventurers in Kelantan, is much more than just a hill. It's a cherished natural retreat nestled within the heart of Kelantan, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. For those in Pasir Mas and surrounding areas, Bukit Kwong stands as an accessible and inviting destination for outdoor activities, particularly hiking. Its tranquil environment, coupled with picturesque views, makes it a popular spot for individuals and families looking to reconnect with nature and enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. While not as extensively publicized as some other regional attractions, its charm lies in its local appeal and the sense of community it fosters among its regular visitors.
Bukit Kwong is conveniently located at Padang Bukit, 17200 Pasir Mas, Kelantan, Malaysia. This strategic position makes it highly accessible for residents throughout Kelantan, especially those in Pasir Mas, Rantau Panjang, Tanah Merah, and surrounding districts. The area is situated approximately 2 km from the Malaysia-Thailand border, near Waeng, Thailand, making it a unique geographical point. It's also in close proximity to areas like Felda Kemahang, Batang Merbau, Kampung Ipoh, Kampung Gual, Bukit Nangka, Ayer Lanas, Kampung Gertak Nombor Tiga, and Gual Kulim, allowing for easy travel for many local communities.
The accessibility of Bukit Kwong is one of its strongest appeals. For those traveling by car, the journey to Padang Bukit is generally straightforward, with well-maintained roads leading to the area. While public transport options directly to the hiking area might be limited, local taxi services or ride-sharing apps can provide convenient access from major towns and transport hubs in Kelantan. The natural setting of Bukit Kwong, while providing an immersive outdoor experience, remains within a comfortable distance for a day trip for most Kelantanese. The simplicity of reaching this natural haven contributes significantly to its popularity among locals seeking an easy getaway.
While Bukit Kwong is primarily a natural hiking area, it's important to set expectations regarding the services available. As a natural reserve, it doesn't offer extensive commercial services akin to a fully developed recreational park. However, visitors can generally expect certain basic provisions and natural amenities:
- Designated Hiking Trails: The area provides clear paths and trails suitable for various levels of hikers, from beginners to those seeking a more challenging ascent. These trails are generally well-trodden and allow for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
- Natural Scenery: The core offering of Bukit Kwong is its breathtaking natural landscape, which includes lush greenery, diverse flora, and the refreshing environment of the Kelantanese countryside.

- Proximity to Border: Its location near the Malaysia-Thailand border makes it a unique point of interest, potentially offering glimpses of the landscape across the border and contributing to a distinctive regional character.
- Undeveloped Natural Beauty: Unlike highly commercialized attractions, Bukit Kwong retains much of its untouched natural beauty, offering an authentic outdoor experience that is increasingly rare to find.
As a natural hiking area and dam site, Bukit Kwong does not typically run commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, such as discounts or package deals for entry. Access to the hiking trails and the natural environment is generally free, aligning with its status as a public natural resource. Any "promotions" or special aspects would more likely come from community-led initiatives, local events, or simply the inherent value of experiencing nature without a hefty price tag.
However, visitors can always find an unspoken "offer" in the form of a refreshing experience and the health benefits of outdoor activity. The opportunity to enjoy clean air, engage in physical exercise, and immerse oneself in Kelantan's natural beauty without significant cost is a promotion in itself for those who value such experiences. Keep an eye on local community boards or social media groups for any informal gatherings, group hikes, or nature clean-up events that might be organized by local enthusiasts, as these could offer unique ways to experience Bukit Kwong with others.
For a natural area like Bukit Kwong, direct contact numbers or official websites dedicated solely to the hiking area itself are not commonly available, unlike commercial establishments. The primary contact information for visiting is its physical address:
Padang Bukit, 17200 Pasir Mas, Kelantan, Malaysia
For general inquiries related to local tourism, environmental matters, or regional development that might indirectly involve Bukit Kwong, you might need to reach out to the Pasir Mas District Council (Majlis Daerah Pasir Mas) or the Kelantan State Tourism Department. However, for planning a visit to the hiking area, the address provided is the most direct and crucial piece of information. Visitors are encouraged to rely on navigation apps for precise directions to Padang Bukit.
Bukit Kwong is truly a gem for the people of Kelantan, particularly those residing in and around Pasir Mas. Its suitability for locals stems from a combination of factors that cater to their lifestyle, cultural values, and desire for accessible outdoor recreation.
Firstly, its accessibility is unparalleled. Being just a short drive from various towns within Kelantan means that a trip to Bukit Kwong doesn't require extensive planning or travel time. This makes it ideal for spontaneous morning hikes, weekend family outings, or a quick escape after a long day. The easy reach encourages regular visits, fostering a healthier and more active community.
Secondly, the diverse appeal of the area is a major draw. Whether you're a seasoned hiker looking for a challenging climb or a family with young children seeking a gentle nature walk, Bukit Kwong offers trails that cater to all. The presence of the dam adds another dimension, providing a tranquil spot for relaxation and enjoying the natural scenery. This versatility ensures that everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, can find something to appreciate here.
Thirdly, Bukit Kwong provides a much-needed natural sanctuary. In an increasingly urbanized world, having a place where one can immerse themselves in lush greenery, breathe fresh air, and listen to the sounds of nature is invaluable. It’s a space where locals can de-stress, recharge, and reconnect with the environment, promoting mental and physical well-being. The positive feedback from visitors, describing it as "Ok" and "comey 😍" (meaning lovely or beautiful in Kelantanese dialect), speaks volumes about the positive experiences and enjoyment it provides.
Moreover, the community spirit often found at Bukit Kwong is a significant advantage. It’s a place where neighbors meet, friends embark on adventures together, and families create lasting memories. This informal gathering spot strengthens community bonds and provides a shared space for outdoor enjoyment.
Finally, the fact that it remains a relatively undeveloped and natural site is part of its charm. It offers an authentic experience of Kelantan’s landscape, free from excessive commercialization, allowing visitors to appreciate nature in its rawest form. This also means it's a cost-effective option for recreation, making it accessible to all segments of the local population.
In essence, Bukit Kwong is more than just a hiking area; it's a community asset, a natural haven, and a perfect destination for Kelantanese locals seeking a refreshing and accessible outdoor experience.

Jul 13, 2023 · Arīff XAlhamdulillah.. reached the top of Bukit Kwong, Rantau Panjang which is 286 meters above sea level.. You can see the Thai (Waeng)-Malay (Kg. Rahmat) border and the Kwong dam. There will be a Chalet with a swimming pool at the foot of the hill for the convenience of the public later..👍👍👍
Sep 26, 2021 · Azhar YussNice trail to try. The trail is relaxed but really good. There are 2 ways to go up, choose the one a little further from the parking lot (for beginners). If you want to go down, it is recommended to use the same trail because it is possible that if you go down on the left side, you will get lost and it will be very steep. May the authorities come and look at these hills to make a nice road, at least if possible mark the road (/tie it with plastic just like the trail going up and follow the garden) if you take the trail up/down the side of the house.2 years ago I came and the top of the hill was very beautiful because there were no weeds at all. It's best to sit up there, but now it's full of weeds. In short, it used to be that the route and the top were neat, but now maybe no one cares or vice versa.
