Lata Berkoh Introduce
For those of us in Pahang who cherish the great outdoors and the untouched beauty of Malaysia's natural heritage, Taman Negara stands as an undisputed jewel. Within this ancient rainforest, one of the accessible and intriguing destinations is Lata Berkoh. While some tourist attractions are about grand vistas or bustling crowds, Lata Berkoh offers a more intimate encounter with nature, a journey into the very heart of the world's oldest rainforest.
The journey to Lata Berkoh itself is part of the adventure, as confirmed by visitor reviews: "You'll only be allowed to reach this point with a guide and there are 2 options: a long trek (8.5 km) full day tour or a short boat ride for about 3 hours, you'll need to walk the last 1 km." This highlights the commitment required to reach this natural wonder, emphasizing the raw, untamed beauty of Taman Negara. While some might find the waterfall "not breathtaking if you're hoping for that," the immersive experience of the "boat ride to there and the short walk through the jungle were more convincing for me than the waterfall itself." This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of a trip to Lata Berkoh: it's about the journey, the pristine jungle, and the unique access to a true wilderness.
This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of Lata Berkoh, nestled within Taman Negara, explaining its location, the experiences it offers, its distinct features, and ultimately, why it remains a compelling and suitable adventure for locals in Pahang seeking a genuine rainforest experience.
Lata Berkoh is a captivating cascade and natural pool situated deep within Taman Negara, Malaysia's premier national park, located in Pahang. Taman Negara itself is a vast expanse of tropical rainforest, estimated to be over 130 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Lata Berkoh is one of the many natural wonders accessible from the main tourist hub of Kuala Tahan, serving as a popular day trip destination for park visitors.
The allure of Lata Berkoh lies not just in the waterfall itself, but in the journey to get there. It offers a quintessential Taman Negara experience, combining a scenic river cruise along the Tahan River with an invigorating jungle trek. This dual-mode access ensures that visitors get to witness the rainforest from different perspectives – from the tranquility of the river, observing riverine flora and fauna, to the immersive experience of walking amidst towering trees and diverse jungle sounds. While the natural pool at Lata Berkoh is present, visitor advisories about "parasites and bacteria" regarding swimming highlight its untouched nature and emphasize the primary experience as observation and appreciation of the pristine environment rather than water-based activities.
Lata Berkoh is located deep within Taman Negara, with its access point typically from Kuala Tahan, Pahang, Malaysia. The provided Plus Code, C9VM+5X, Kuala Tahan, pinpoints its location more precisely within the park's vast area, confirming its natural, remote setting. Kuala Tahan serves as the main gateway to Taman Negara in Pahang, and all journeys to Lata Berkoh commence from here.
Accessibility to Lata Berkoh is unique and integral to the experience, as direct road access is not available. Visitors have two primary guided options from Kuala Tahan:
- Boat Ride: This is the most common and quicker method. A longboat ride along the Tahan River takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours each way from Kuala Tahan. The "boat ride to there...were more convincing for me than the waterfall itself" as per reviews, highlighting the scenic journey. Upon reaching a designated drop-off point, visitors then undertake a short, approximately 1 km jungle walk to reach the cascade. This entire boat trip and short walk typically lasts about "3 hours" in total, and costs "250 RM per group (max 4 people)".
- Long Trek: For the more adventurous and physically fit, a "long trek (8.5 km) full day tour" is an option from Kuala Tahan. This demanding jungle trek allows for a deeper immersion into the rainforest environment, providing opportunities for spotting wildlife and experiencing the park's challenging terrain.
Reaching Kuala Tahan itself is manageable from other parts of Pahang and Malaysia. There are direct bus services from Jerantut (a nearby town) and shuttle services from Kuala Lumpur. Private vehicles can be parked at secure lots in Kuala Tahan. Due to its remote nature within the national park, access to Lata Berkoh always requires a registered guide, ensuring safety and compliance with park regulations.
A visit to Lata Berkoh, being part of the Taman Negara experience, comes with a range of services designed to facilitate exploration and ensure safety within the rainforest. These services are often provided by licensed tour operators in Kuala Tahan, or directly by the park's management:
- Guided River Cruises: The primary service is the longboat ride along the Tahan River to the Lata Berkoh trailhead. These boat rides are typically operated by experienced local boatmen, providing scenic transport through the rainforest.
- Jungle Trekking Tours: Both the short 1 km walk to Lata Berkoh and the longer 8.5 km trek are conducted as guided tours. Licensed nature guides lead these treks, providing insights into the rainforest ecosystem, identifying flora and fauna, and ensuring visitor safety.
- Permits & Fees Management: Access to Taman Negara requires permits (park entrance permit and camera permit). Tour operators often assist with obtaining these, streamlining the entry process for visitors to Lata Berkoh.
- Safety Briefings & Equipment: Guides provide essential safety briefings before jungle treks and boat rides, and basic safety equipment (like life jackets for boat rides) is provided.
- Wildlife Spotting Opportunities: While not guaranteed, the boat ride and jungle trek offer chances to spot various wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and other rainforest inhabitants, with guides often pointing out interesting observations.
- Refreshment Stops (Limited): Depending on the tour package, some tours might include basic refreshments or allow time for self-prepared snacks at designated rest points.
- Photography Opportunities: The pristine nature of the Tahan River and the jungle offers abundant opportunities for nature photography.
These services ensure a structured, safe, and informative experience when visiting Lata Berkoh, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the unique environment of Taman Negara.
Lata Berkoh, and the journey to it, offers several distinctive features and highlights that make it a memorable experience within Taman Negara:
- Scenic Tahan River Boat Ride: As highlighted by reviews, the longboat journey along the Tahan River is often a highlight in itself. Visitors can observe the ancient rainforest canopy from the water, listen to the jungle sounds, and potentially spot riverine wildlife.
- Immersive Jungle Trek: Whether it's the short 1 km walk or the challenging 8.5 km trek, the journey through the primary rainforest provides an authentic immersion into one of the world's oldest ecosystems. This offers a chance to see giant trees, unique flora, and feel the raw energy of the jungle.
- Natural Cascade & Rock Formations: While not described as "breathtaking" in scale, Lata Berkoh itself is a natural cascade and a series of clear pools formed by the river flowing over rocks. Its appeal lies in its pristine, untouched quality rather than sheer height or volume.
- Pristine Environment: The remoteness and protected status of Taman Negara ensure that Lata Berkoh remains in a largely untouched, pristine condition, offering a genuine wilderness experience.
- Guided Experience: The requirement of a guide ensures safety and provides invaluable insights into the rainforest's biodiversity, making the journey educational as well as adventurous.
- Accessible Wilderness: Despite being deep in the rainforest, the boat ride option makes this wilderness accessible even for those with limited trekking abilities, allowing a broader range of visitors to experience Taman Negara's interior.
- Gateway to Deeper Exploration: For those on the long trek, Lata Berkoh can be a point of interest along a more extensive rainforest exploration, acting as a reward after a challenging hike.
These features collectively offer a unique and authentic rainforest adventure that defines the essence of visiting Taman Negara.

May 22, 2024 · PtitsuisseLata Berkoh is a natural attraction in Taman Negara, renowned for its picturesque setting. Located along the Tahan River, this series of small waterfalls and natural pools is a popular spot for swimming and picnicking. The journey to Lata Berkoh is an adventure in itself, as visitors must take a boat trip upstream to reach the site. In my opinion, the boat ride is the best part of the journey and offers an exhilarating experience, with scenic views of the lush rainforest and occasional wildlife sightings along the way. Highly recommended for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike!
Jul 28, 2024 · Maurizio MuratoreTook the NKS tour package... Rm250 for one boat, and in this case have to take 2 boat (rm500) as there were 6 of us...We have to climb for 30 mins as I am bringing my boy, and the journey was quite challenging as they have to climb up and down the slope...Once we reached the top... It was OK type of scenery and not much wow effect... The current was fast and there was nothing much we can do up there... Rested a while and walk backed down where the kids had some water moment on the rocky river 💦😁This part, must prepared early, so they had wore some swimming clothes inside their outdoor shirt. The kids love playing at the water and about 1 5-20mins was sufficient 💙.. River water was cool and refreshing after an hour walk to and back... Beautiful moment with the kids 💖
Dec 08, 2023 · darluvcasAmazing boat ride from the jetty. U can wear your hat but most of the boat ride is along shady trees. RM250/boat max 5 people. Keep calm when you are approached by hundred of bees😂😂😂 and make sure to dip into the water.
