Mahallah LTAT, IIUM Introduce
For parents and students in Selangor, finding the right hostel is a crucial decision that can significantly impact a student's academic and personal growth. Mahallah LTAT, IIUM is a prominent student hostel located within the Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (IIUM) campus in Gombak. While it is primarily a long-term residence for students from institutions like Setiabudi school and IISM, its well-organized structure and comprehensive facilities make it a well-known name in the local community. The detailed review from a former resident offers a candid glimpse into the daily life and environment of the hostel, highlighting its strengths and areas for consideration.
The hostel is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a living and learning community that fosters independence and academic discipline. The management’s focus on structured living, with allocated study hours and clear rules, is a key feature. The communal aspect is strong, with students from different schools interacting and participating in shared activities like prayer and social events. This environment is designed to be a supportive home away from home, which is a major comfort for both students and their families.
Mahallah LTAT is situated within the expansive campus of Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (IIUM) in Gombak, Selangor. The address is IIUM, 53100, Selangor, Malaysia. Being on campus provides an incredible level of convenience, especially for students who attend IIUM or the schools it is affiliated with, as it eliminates the need for a daily commute. The hostel is well-integrated into the university's transport system, with transport provided to and from school, which is consistently on time.
While the hostel is located within the campus grounds, its accessibility to the wider Selangor and Kuala Lumpur areas is still excellent. The campus is connected to major highways like the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway. This makes it easy for parents to visit their children on weekends or during holidays. For those who rely on public transport, the Gombak LRT station is the nearest hub. From there, taxis, ride-hailing services, or local buses can take you directly to the IIUM campus.
The Gombak area itself offers a blend of natural scenery and urban conveniences. Nearby attractions include the lush green landscapes of Hulu Kelang and the vibrant food scene of Gombak. The ease of access to the city center and other parts of Selangor makes it a practical location for a student, allowing them to stay connected while living in a more focused and secure environment.

Mahallah LTAT, IIUM Reviews
I stayed here for two years and left in 2022, after completing my IGCSEs. Students from both the Setiabudi school & IISM get along very well and hang out. To my knowledge, there has only been one case of bullying that has occurred, and that was very early on when I first joined. The students are put into dorms of students in the same school, which can be helpful for academic collaboration. However, one thing that makes me curious is the fact that students (from IISM) from different countries are put with other students from the same country. I feel this decreases the ethnic diversity and ethnic cooperation and I'd suggest giving new students the choice whether they'd like to be with 'their own people' or with others. The hostel used to be watched over by two very kind, reliable and likeable wardens, however one recently left to reach for higher pursuits. Regardless, both do/did a great job at being wardens. The hostel also occasionally holds events, such as Hari Raya celebrations for those staying in the hostel during Hari Raya and the hostel BBQ which brings life to the hostel. During Ramadhan, all students pray together in one prayer room for Maghrib, Ishaa' & Terawih. The rooms are clean from litter, albeit a bit dusty when you first enter. As it's your room and the hostel promotes independence, you can choose whether to clean it. That said, there is an allocated time for students to quickly clean their rooms on every Wednesday, so the room will generally be quite clean. It's not too tedious of a task. The rooms are fitted with fans as well as ACs (depending on the type of room you paid for). Furthermore, there is one hour allocated everyday (except Wednesday & weekends) which ensures that students study at least a little bit each day, which helps with academic performance. The rules are clearly stated in the handbook, however one rule that I feel should be eased is the inability to cook. Understandably this is to prevent fires, but students usually turn to instant noodles (kettles are allowed) if they are still hungry (after eating food from the food package), which can be unhealthy long-term.Speaking of rules, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hostel mandated students to self-test every once a week to prevent infection, which is a good safety measure to have (whether mandated by the government or not).Transport is always on time and gets the students to/from school on time as well (given no student is late). The food package is mediocre, but can be really tasty sometimes. Recently, the food package has been delivered in a different way, and most students were happy with the change. There are top-facing washing machines although a number of them have malfunctioned over the months I was here. Since there are a lot of students and only a few washing machines, getting clothes washed may take a long time.It also has a computer room with several computers for studying, and wifi is provided although it can be slow, especially on the weekends. Behind the hostel there is a small football court for students to play football. There is also a basketball hoop for anyone who wants to play basketball. The parking is usually enough even on busy days when parents come back to pickup their children for the holidays. My heaviest critique with the hostel is the costly pricing. Compared to other institutions, it is significantly higher, possibly for a much smaller room as well. All in all, I had a great time at Mahallah LTAT, giving me many fond memories, and I hope it continues to serve students as well as it did for me.
