Sorok Introduce
Greetings, food enthusiasts of Selangor! Are you always on the hunt for a cozy spot that serves up familiar, comforting Malaysian flavours? Look no further than Sorok, a local eatery nestled in the tranquil area of Bukit Bandaraya, Shah Alam. True to its name, which means 'hidden' in Malay, Sorok offers a delightful escape for those seeking a relaxed dining experience away from the bustling city centre, yet still conveniently located for us locals.
Sorok aims to be your go-to spot for everything from a quick lunch to a leisurely 'minum petang' (afternoon tea) or a satisfying dinner. With a menu that features a mix of beloved local dishes, it strives to cater to diverse palates within our community. This article will guide you through the ins and outs of Sorok, from its accessible location to the specific dishes that have garnered attention, helping you decide if this 'hidden gem' is your next favourite dining spot in Shah Alam.
Sorok is conveniently located at Jalan Gunung Nuang U11/3, Bukit Bandaraya, 40100 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. This address places it within the peaceful and increasingly popular residential enclave of Bukit Bandaraya, an area known for its greenery and a more relaxed pace of life compared to the more commercialised parts of Shah Alam.
While the name 'Sorok' suggests it might be tucked away, its location on Jalan Gunung Nuang U11/3 is part of a growing commercial and F&B cluster within Bukit Bandaraya, making it reasonably easy to find for those familiar with the area. For those driving, there is typically street parking available within the vicinity, though it's always advisable to arrive a little earlier during peak hours to secure a spot. Access to Bukit Bandaraya from major roads like Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari or the Guthrie Corridor Expressway makes Sorok quite accessible for residents from various parts of Shah Alam, including those from neighbouring sections like U10 and U12. Its setting away from the main thoroughfares provides a quieter dining experience, perfect for a relaxed meal or gathering.
Sorok operates as a casual dining restaurant, offering a menu that blends local Malaysian favourites with some broader culinary selections. Its services are designed to cater to a range of dining occasions, from quick bites to more relaxed meals. Based on customer feedback and typical restaurant operations in Selangor, here’s what you can expect:
- Dine-in Service: The restaurant provides a comfortable setting for customers to enjoy their meals on-site. The ambiance is casual, suitable for family outings, gatherings with friends, or even a solo meal.
- À la Carte Menu: Sorok offers a menu from which customers can order individual dishes. This allows for flexibility and ensures that diners can select exactly what they crave. Examples from customer reviews include Char Kuey Teow, Lempeng with Sambal, pizza, and satay, indicating a diverse offering.
- Beverage Selection: A range of hot and cold beverages is available to complement the meals. While not explicitly detailed, local favorites like teh tarik, kopi, and iced drinks are typically on offer.
- 'Minum Petang' Option: As noted by a customer who visited around 4:45 pm, Sorok is suitable for 'minum petang' (afternoon tea/snack). This suggests they cater to lighter meals and drinks during mid-afternoon hours, making it a good spot for a casual meet-up.
- Takeaway Service: While not explicitly mentioned in reviews, most local restaurants of this type offer takeaway options for customers who prefer to enjoy their food at home or elsewhere.
- Kitchen Service Speed: Customer feedback indicates varying speeds, with Char Kuey Teow being served "within 5 mins," which is notably fast. This suggests an efficient kitchen for certain dishes, especially during non-peak hours.
It's important for potential customers to consider feedback regarding service, as one review mentioned "slow service" and a "rude staff who took my drink order." While individual experiences can vary, it highlights areas that the restaurant may be working to address.
Sorok aims to carve out its niche in the Shah Alam dining scene with several distinctive features and highlights, as observed from customer experiences and the type of establishment it is:
- Diverse Local Menu: One of the key highlights is the variety of dishes on offer, ranging from classic Malaysian staples like Char Kuey Teow and Lempeng with Sambal to more universal items like pizza and satay. This diverse menu caters to different cravings within a single setting.
- Exceptional Lempeng and Sambal: A definite highlight, as enthusiastically reviewed by a customer, is their "excellent" Lempeng and Sambal. Described as "Crispy lempeng on the outside and very soft in the inside" with a "spicy and on point" sambal, this dish clearly stands out and is a must-try for visitors.
- Quick Service for Specific Dishes: The ability to serve Char Kuey Teow within 5 minutes, as noted by a customer during a non-peak period, indicates an efficient kitchen, especially for certain popular items. This is a plus for those looking for a fast meal.
- Casual and Relaxed Ambiance: Located in Bukit Bandaraya, Sorok likely offers a more laid-back and less bustling environment compared to restaurants in high-traffic commercial centres. This makes it ideal for a relaxed meal or gathering.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere (Implied): Restaurants offering a mix of local and some Western-style comfort food often appeal to families, providing options for different age groups.
- Potential for Improvement: While some reviews point to areas like slow service or blandness in certain dishes (e.g., Char Kuey Teow's overall flavour and chili jeruk), the fact that they are noted indicates specific aspects that the restaurant can continuously work on to enhance the customer experience, striving for overall excellence.
The combination of a diverse menu and specific standout dishes like the Lempeng and Sambal positions Sorok as a place with potential for a delightful local dining experience in Shah Alam.
As a local casual dining restaurant, Sorok might engage in promotions and special offers that are typical for eateries in Selangor, focusing on value and attracting repeat customers. While specific, time-bound deals aren't publicly detailed in the provided information, we can infer potential strategies:
- Set Meals for Lunch or Dinner: Many local restaurants offer value-for-money set meals, combining a main dish with a drink or side. Sorok could potentially offer such sets to encourage more comprehensive orders and provide a clear pricing option.
- Weekend Specials: To draw in families or groups, special dishes or promotions for weekends might be introduced, perhaps featuring traditional Malay dishes that are more elaborate or less commonly found on the daily menu.
- Afternoon Tea (Minum Petang) Deals: Given that it caters to 'minum petang', Sorok might offer specific bundles or discounts on snacks and beverages during these hours, encouraging more customers to drop by for a light meal.
- Loyalty Programs or Punch Cards: While not confirmed, some local businesses implement simple loyalty programs where repeat customers earn points or get a free item after a certain number of visits.
- Social Media Promotions: Restaurants often use platforms like Facebook or Instagram to announce daily specials, new menu items, or limited-time discounts. It's advisable for locals to check Sorok's social media presence (if any) for the latest updates.
- Combo Deals for Specific Dishes: For popular items like Char Kuey Teow or other noodle/rice dishes, they might offer combo deals that include a drink or a small side at a reduced price compared to ordering separately.

Aug 21, 2024 · Najwa NabilaWe went for ‘minum petang’ today around 4:45pm. Not many customers, only 2 tables. So we ordered:1) Char Kuetiau RM8- Char taste is nice.- Food temperature also on point.- Got the food within 5 mins which is really fast.- The overall flavour needs to improve because it tasted biasa biasa je. Nothing special.- The cili jeruk tasted bland. Tasted like regular fresh chili actually, or chili that has only been celup dalam cuka tapi tak rendam. faham tak? haha this one really need to rnd new recipe because it’s not actually hard to jeruk some chilies.- 2/5 stars!2) Lempeng and Sambal RM7- This one is excellent!- Crispy lempeng on the outside and very soft in the inside.- Sambal is spicy and on point.- 5/5 stars!
May 13, 2024 · boss evacan't remember when was the first time i knew about this, before or during pkp but since then i have always planned to come here but never been able to go yet until last night finally i reached there; and it is totally within my expectations. i ordered char kuey teow where it is really char as in dried kuey teow (rather than the malay version where char kuey teow is usually the wet one). worth the price and the taste is 9/10. it is much better when you eat it just right after it was cooked 🤤oh and i ordered white coffee as well, but that one meh. would give 3/10 :(other than ckt, there are also other stalls that sell ice cream, street burger, and sate (not sure the rest). nice place to come with family. cuma meja susah sikit nak dapat especially kalau weekend.the way to this place is quite eerie cuz you need to go through bukit cherakah (taman botani now) first so along that road it is very dark but overall ok je. since it is located at taman perumahan, so everyone just park it along the roadside.

Nov 26, 2023 · Farid AriffinMy first time here and didn’t get a good impression at all. First things first, I was standing at the cashier and yet the staff took his own sweet time to wipe the counter. Is it really hard to address your customer with a polite “I’ll be with you in a second” ? But since I was there I decided to proceed with my order. Like I said, it was my first time so I didn’t know how it works. Apparently I had to collect my order at the counter. He didn’t ask for my name nor gave me a buzzer so technically speaking customers have to guess when their orders are ready and go and ask them. I waited for 15 minutes just for me to learn that my order was there already. Will I come again? Maybe. But I’m definitely not in a hurry because the char kuey teow is just alright, nothing much to shout about.
