Tropics Shopping Center Introduce
Selangor, as a vibrant and rapidly developing state in Malaysia, is home to a multitude of shopping complexes, each striving to cater to the diverse needs of its populace. From sprawling supermalls to quaint neighbourhood centres, residents have a wide array of choices for their retail and leisure pursuits. In Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya, one such establishment is Tropics Shopping Centre. While the landscape of retail is constantly evolving, it's important for local users in Selangor to have an accurate and up-to-date understanding of what this particular shopping centre currently offers. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Tropics Shopping Centre, from the perspective of a local user, helping them to navigate its current offerings and identify its continuing relevance.
The perception of a shopping centre can shift over time, and Tropics Shopping Centre is no exception. It is crucial to acknowledge that, as per recent feedback from real customers, the centre has undergone significant changes in its retail composition and overall vibrancy. Reviews indicate a substantial number of vacant lots, which can contribute to a different atmosphere compared to more bustling malls. However, even within this evolving environment, certain anchor tenants and specialized services continue to serve the local community. Understanding these specific offerings is key for residents looking to utilize the centre for their daily needs.
Despite challenges, a local shopping centre often retains its value through key essential services and the convenience it offers to its immediate neighbourhood. For residents of Damansara Perdana and surrounding areas, Tropics Shopping Centre still provides access to crucial amenities. This guide will delve into its current status, highlighting the functional aspects that remain relevant for locals and providing a factual overview to help inform their shopping choices.
Tropics Shopping Centre is strategically located at 15, Jalan PJU 8/1, Damansara Perdana, 47820 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. This address places it within a well-established and accessible residential and commercial hub in Petaling Jaya, making it convenient for residents of Damansara Perdana and nearby areas like Mutiara Damansara and Bandar Utama.
Accessibility details for locals:
- Road Network: Jalan PJU 8/1 connects easily to major arteries such as the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) and the Penchala Link, ensuring smooth access by car from various parts of Petaling Jaya and greater Selangor.
- Parking Facility: The centre provides a multi-level parking facility. Customer reviews suggest that while the parking is often empty, which can be convenient for immediate access, its pricing may be a consideration.
- Public Transport: While Damansara Perdana itself might not have direct LRT/MRT access immediately adjacent to the mall, it is generally well-served by bus routes that connect to major public transport hubs. E-hailing services like Grab are readily available in the area, offering a convenient alternative for those without private vehicles.
- Residential Proximity: Its location within a dense residential area means that for many living in condominiums and apartments around Damansara Perdana, the shopping centre is within walking distance or a very short drive, making it a highly convenient stop for daily necessities.
Despite any changes in its retail landscape, the physical location and accessibility of Tropics Shopping Centre remain a key advantage for the immediate local community.
Based on the provided customer reviews, Tropics Shopping Centre's current array of services is more focused on essential needs and specific niche offerings rather than a broad retail selection. The remaining operational businesses appear to cater to daily necessities and specialized personal care.
Key services and businesses that are still present and noted include:
- Jaya Grocer: This is identified as a significant anchor tenant and a primary draw for local residents. Jaya Grocer provides a comprehensive selection of groceries, fresh produce, and household essentials, serving as a vital resource for daily shopping needs.
- The Baker's Son Bakery: Mentioned as a "worthwhile destination," this bakery likely offers a variety of fresh bread, pastries, and baked goods, appealing to those looking for quality daily treats or breakfast items.
- Computer/Phone Repair Shops: A significant portion of the remaining businesses are described as "computer/phone repair shops," indicating that the centre continues to offer essential tech repair and support services for electronics.
- Beauty Salons: Similarly, "beauty salons" are noted as being among the active establishments, suggesting that residents can still access personal grooming and aesthetic services within the centre.
- Limited Food & Beverage Options: While not explicitly detailed, the presence of a grocery store and bakery implies that there might be some small cafes or food stalls catering to quick bites, though the overall F&B selection is likely limited.
It is important for locals to understand that the services offered are currently concentrated on these specific categories, reflecting a shift from a comprehensive shopping mall to a more specialized community hub focused on convenience.
Given the current status of Tropics Shopping Centre, its highlights for local users are centered around utility and convenience rather than extensive retail variety:
- Anchor Tenant Jaya Grocer: The consistent presence and perceived quality of Jaya Grocer are major highlights. For many locals, this supermarket alone makes the centre a valuable destination for grocery shopping, providing a wide range of fresh and imported goods.
- Specialized Services: The concentration of computer/phone repair shops and beauty salons means that residents have convenient access to these essential personal and tech services without needing to travel to larger malls.
- Convenient Location for Damansara Perdana Residents: Its strategic position in Damansara Perdana makes it an incredibly convenient stop for immediate local needs, especially for those living within walking distance.
- Less Crowded Environment: While a sign of its current challenges, the "often empty" nature of the mall can be a highlight for some, offering a quieter, less chaotic shopping experience compared to overcrowded megamalls.
- Ease of Parking (despite cost): The availability of empty parking spots can be a convenience, saving time and effort often spent searching for parking in busier commercial areas.
- The Baker's Son Bakery: The mention of this bakery as a "worthwhile destination" indicates a highlight for those seeking fresh baked goods and a pleasant culinary stop.
These features cater to specific, practical needs of the local community, emphasizing its role as a functional convenience centre.
Specific, ongoing mall-wide promotions or special offers for Tropics Shopping Centre as a whole are not publicly detailed and may be limited given its current operational status. Promotions are more likely to be offered by individual tenants rather than the mall management.
Locals interested in specific deals should look out for:
- Jaya Grocer Promotions: Jaya Grocer frequently runs its own weekly or seasonal promotions on groceries, fresh produce, and other items. These would be advertised directly by Jaya Grocer within their store or through their own marketing channels.
- Individual Tenant Discounts: The computer/phone repair shops and beauty salons may offer their own specific discounts or loyalty programs. For example, a salon might have a first-time customer discount, or a repair shop might offer a special rate for certain services.
- Seasonal Sales: While not a mall-wide event, individual shops might participate in general festive or clearance sales during major Malaysian holidays.
It is advisable for locals to directly check with Jaya Grocer or the specific repair shops and salons they intend to visit for any current offers. Information regarding such promotions is best obtained in person or through the direct channels of the individual businesses operating within the centre.

Tropics Shopping Center Reviews
Horrible place. Dying mall, 98% shops permanently closed never to reopen/return, the ones that are still around are mainly computer/phone repair shops & beauty salons, the whole ground floor (Jaya Grocer area) smells of raw meat & sewer. This was only the 2nd time I've ever stepped foot in this dunghole (1st time was way back in 2011/2012 - back then it was lovely and many shops were in business). Never want to come back here ever again.
May 14, 2024 · Timothy John JindiTropics Shopping Centre, unfortunately, falls short of expectations. The presence of numerous vacant lots and an unnerving atmosphere on certain days detracts from the overall appeal. The parking facility, although often empty, comes with a high price tag that does not justify its use. Among the limited selection of shops, Jaya Grocer and The Baker's Son bakery stand out as worthwhile destinations. Regrettably, the remaining establishments suffer from a lack of customers and a general lack of interest. It is evident that the shopping center requires improvements to attract more visitors and revitalize the shopping experience.

Oct 11, 2023 · Nurol JuriahThe gate of this shoppin' centre is not good, difficult to touch the Touch'NGO machine. But I like this shopping centre because there are JayaGrocer, liquor shop, Non halal shop and barbershop. There are good car parking anytime we find out space.
Jan 13, 2024 · Shinichiro KURIHARAThe placed was rather run down. However, it is a great place to start a business due to the low rental rate. There was Jaya Grocer which attracts crowd in the evening and during weekend. Low parking rate at RM1.60 per hour. A great place to get your grocery here.
