Jalan Taman Zooview, Kampung Kemensah, 68000 Ampang, Selangor, Malaysia

Although just a short trail of hiking (around 30 to 45 minutes depends upon your fitness)…it does test your endurance as it’s ascending from the very beginning to the peak. The trail quite slippery and you have to be very careful as you walk through the bushes of bamboos… mind your head because you have to bend down as well as you walk through it. Oh 1st of all you’ve got to get a permit to enter here. And way up to the peak is quite steep and tricky because you need to rock climbing so please be extra careful. View is 360 degrees. Very nice view they had up there and you can see Genting from here too. - 얀티라즐리

Bukit Batu Chondong (Entrance) Introduce

Selangor, a state celebrated for its dynamic urban landscape and vast natural reserves, offers a diverse range of outdoor activities for its residents. For those with a thirst for adventure and a desire to challenge themselves, Bukit Batu Chondong (Entrance) in Kampung Kemensah, Ampang, stands out as a rewarding hiking destination. Unlike some gentler trails, this area promises an exhilarating experience, pushing your endurance with its consistent ascent and offering a thrilling taste of rock climbing, all culminating in a breathtaking panoramic view. For local hikers in Selangor seeking a moderately challenging trek with a spectacular payoff, Bukit Batu Chondong presents an ideal opportunity to test their limits and connect with nature.

This hiking spot is gaining popularity among the more adventurous segment of Selangor's hiking community. It's not a leisurely stroll; instead, it's designed to test your fitness from the very beginning. The trail is characterized by its steep incline, requiring hikers to be mindful of their footing due to potentially slippery sections, especially after rain. Navigating through dense bamboo bushes adds another element of adventure, often requiring hikers to bend down and maneuver through tight spots. The mention of "rock climbing" might sound intimidating, but it refers to sections where hikers need to use their hands to scramble over boulders or ascend steeper rocky parts, adding an exciting, technical aspect to the climb. The ultimate reward for this effort is a stunning 360-degree view from the peak, offering a sweeping vista that includes parts of Genting Highlands on a clear day. For many local enthusiasts, the allure lies in the physical challenge and the magnificent natural beauty that awaits at the summit.

However, it is crucial to highlight that accessing this hiking area requires a permit. As of April 1, 2025, the Selangor Forestry Department launched a new online permit system (SeForest) which covers 52 mountains and hills under its jurisdiction, including areas like Bukit Batu Chondong. Entering a Permanent Forest Reserve without a permit can result in a fine of up to RM30,000 or up to five years in prison, or both, under Section 47(1) of the National Forestry Act 1984. Therefore, proper preparation, including securing the necessary permit, is paramount for a safe and legal hike. Reviews from real customers reinforce the nature of the challenge: "Although just a short trail of hiking (around 30 to 45 minutes depends upon your fitness)…it does test your endurance as it’s ascending from the very beginning to the peak. Very nice view they had up there and you can see Genting from here too." Another review confirms the duration and highlights the sunrise opportunity: "Start hike at 6:30 am. Good time for sunrise view is around 7:15 am. Hike and climbing apx 30-40mins to the the peak."

Location and Accessibility

Bukit Batu Chondong (Entrance) is conveniently located at Jalan Taman Zooview, Kampung Kemensah, 68000 Ampang, Selangor, Malaysia. This places it within the Kemensah area, which is well-known to many Selangor residents for its various outdoor activities and proximity to Zoo Negara. The strategic location means it's easily reachable from major urban centers in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

For most residents, reaching the trailhead is best done by private vehicle. Jalan Taman Zooview leads into the Kampung Kemensah area, which is increasingly popular for outdoor recreational activities. While public transport options directly to the trailhead might be limited, visitors can take buses or use ride-hailing services to get to the general Ampang or Zoo Negara vicinity, and then arrange for a short ride or walk to the starting point. Ample parking is typically available near the entrance, though it's always advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, to secure a spot. The proximity to civilization, yet its immersion in nature, makes Bukit Batu Chondong an ideal spot for a quick but intense morning workout before the day truly begins. The clear landmarks in the area, such as Zoo Negara and the ATV adventure parks, make navigation relatively straightforward for those familiar with Ampang.

Services Offered

As a natural hiking area, Bukit Batu Chondong (Entrance) primarily offers access to its challenging trails and the natural environment. It is not a commercial establishment with extensive formal services. However, implicit "services" or provisions for hikers would include:

  • Access to Hiking Trails: The core offering is the well-defined (though challenging) trail system that leads to the peak.
  • Natural Environment for Outdoor Recreation: The area provides lush greenery, bamboo groves, and rocky terrains for an immersive nature experience.
  • Viewpoints: The peak offers a 360-degree panoramic view, which is the primary reward for completing the hike.
  • Informal Trail Features: Sections requiring rock climbing, bending through bamboo, and potentially slippery paths are part of the challenge. There are mentions of "3 options to the peak," suggesting varying levels of difficulty for the final ascent.
  • Permit System: Access to this forest reserve now requires a permit from the Selangor Forestry Department via the SeForest online system. This is a crucial "service" in terms of regulating access and ensuring compliance with forestry regulations. The permit costs RM5 per person.

It is important to note that hikers are expected to be self-sufficient, bringing their own water, snacks, appropriate hiking gear (including sturdy shoes), and emergency supplies. Reviews mention the presence of "many dogs here," which while not a service, is a characteristic of the environment. There are no direct mentions of public restrooms or formal rest stops along the trail, so visitors should plan accordingly.

Features / Highlights

Bukit Batu Chondong offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a unique and popular choice for local hikers:

These features combine to offer a thrilling yet accessible hiking experience that provides both physical challenge and stunning natural beauty.

Promotions or Special Offers

As Bukit Batu Chondong is a natural forest reserve hiking area, there are no commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense, such as discounts or package deals. The primary "offer" is access to its natural trails and views, which requires a mandatory permit.

  • Permit Fee: The permit to enter the Permanent Forest Reserve is priced at RM5 per person. This is a standard regulatory fee rather than a promotional offer.
  • Free Natural Experience: Beyond the permit fee, the experience of hiking and enjoying the natural environment is essentially free.
  • Sunrise Opportunity: The ability to experience a beautiful sunrise from the peak (around 7:15 am if starting at 6:30 am) is a natural "promotion" that draws early morning hikers.
  • Fitness Challenge: The inherent challenge and sense of accomplishment from conquering the steep and tricky trail serve as a self-motivated "promotion" for fitness enthusiasts.

Hikers should apply for their permits online through the Selangor Forestry e-Permit System (SEFOREST) at least 48 hours before their intended hike and make payment within 24 hours of approval. This streamlined online process is a recent "improvement" in accessibility for permits, making it easier for locals to comply with regulations.

The hike itself provides a unique and rewarding challenge. For early risers, the opportunity to witness a spectacular sunrise from this vantage point adds an unforgettable dimension to the experience, making the early start well worth it.
