Are you a Selangor local looking for a refreshing outdoor escape that’s both invigorating and accessible? Look no further than Bukit Kembara Peak in Ampang Jaya! This unassuming yet captivating hill offers a fantastic opportunity for residents across Selangor, from bustling Petaling Jaya to the serene corners of Shah Alam, to immerse themselves in nature without venturing too far from the city. Known for its rewarding trails and a picturesque reservoir, Bukit Kembara Peak is quickly becoming a favourite for those seeking a quick dose of adventure and tranquility.
Often translated as 'Adventure Hill', Bukit Kembara lives up to its name by providing a delightful journey for hikers of all levels, especially beginners. It’s a modest hill, standing at approximately 270 metres above sea level, making it ideal for a vigorous yet manageable hike. What truly sets this location apart is the serene Ampang Impounding Reservoir nestled at its foot, a historical landmark built in 1892 that adds a unique charm to your hiking experience. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting your outdoor journey, Bukit Kembara Peak promises a memorable outing filled with lush greenery, peaceful surroundings, and a chance to reconnect with nature right here in Selangor.
Bukit Kembara Peak is conveniently located in the Taman Tun Abdul Razak area of Ampang, on the eastern outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, making it highly accessible for residents throughout Selangor. The official address is 68000 Ampang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. This prime location means that whether you’re driving from Subang Jaya, Klang, or even closer areas like Cheras, reaching this natural gem is a straightforward affair. The trailhead is generally found on Cangkat Bukit Indah 2, opposite Emerald Hill Condominium, serving as a well-known starting point for most hikers. There's also another approach from Taman TAR, accessible between two bungalows on Jalan 1, which is considered an easier route.
For those relying on GPS, the coordinates for the trailhead near Emerald Hill Condominium are approximately 3.158312, 101.775266. While public transport options might require a combination of services, driving remains the most convenient way to reach Bukit Kembara. You'll find free street parking available near the trailhead, although it can get tricky during peak hours, so arriving early is always advisable. The trail itself is remarkably well-marked in many sections with hose pipes, which helps prevent getting lost, even for first-timers. This accessibility, coupled with clear trail guidance, ensures a hassle-free and enjoyable experience for all visitors from Selangor and beyond.
While Bukit Kembara Peak is primarily a natural attraction, focusing on hiking and enjoying the outdoors, there are several implicit "services" and considerations that contribute to a positive visitor experience:
- Well-Maintained Hiking Trails: The paths are generally clear, though some sections can be steep and muddy after rain. Ropes and hose pipes are often installed in trickier areas to assist hikers.
- Nature Immersion: The primary service is the opportunity to escape urban life and enjoy a dense forest ecosystem, providing a peaceful and refreshing environment.
- Circuit Around the Reservoir: A dedicated, clear path circles the Ampang Impounding Reservoir, perfect for leisurely walks or jogs after the peak ascent.
- Historical Significance: The presence of the Ampang Impounding Reservoir, built in 1892, offers a glimpse into Kuala Lumpur's early water supply history.
- Self-Guided Exploration: The park caters to independent adventurers, requiring no formal guide or entry fee.
- Resting Areas: Simple, makeshift benches are available at the summit and around the lake for hikers to take a break.
It's important to note that, as a natural reserve, Bukit Kembara Peak does not offer commercial services like refreshment stalls, public restrooms, or equipment rental directly within the hiking area. Visitors are advised to come prepared with their own water, snacks, and any necessary hiking gear.
Bukit Kembara Peak boasts several features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for nature lovers and hikers:
- Beginner-Friendly Hike: Despite some steep sections, the overall hike is considered suitable for beginners, with a typical ascent to the peak taking around 20-25 minutes.
- The Ampang Impounding Reservoir: This tranquil lake is the true highlight of Bukit Kembara. Accessible after a descent from the peak, it offers a serene environment for a leisurely stroll (a circuit around the dam takes about 20 minutes) and breathtaking views. It's often described as a "hidden hiking gem" for its peaceful and cooling atmosphere.
- Mini Waterfall: Along the loop around the reservoir, hikers can discover a charming mini waterfall, adding to the natural beauty of the area.
- Diverse Ecosystem: The area around the lake is peaceful, clean, and unspoiled, providing a habitat for various insects, birds, and even monkeys, offering a chance for wildlife spotting.
- Historical Structure: The reservoir features a unique short metal pier leading to an inspection shaft topped with a shapely pergola, with ornate Victorian ironwork possibly dating back to the 1890s.
- Challenging Yet Rewarding Trail: The hike includes varied terrain, from stair climbs to steep descents, offering a good workout for casual hikers. The journey itself is often more of a draw than the peak, which offers no expansive view.
- Rope-Assisted Sections: For safety and assistance on steeper parts, particularly the downhill stretch to the lake which can be muddy, ropes and hosepipes are strategically placed.
These features combine to create a dynamic and enjoyable outdoor experience, catering to those who appreciate both a physical challenge and serene natural beauty.
As Bukit Kembara Peak is a public natural reserve and hiking area, there are generally no commercial promotions or special offers directly associated with the 'park' itself. Access to the hiking trails and the reservoir is free of charge, making it an excellent and affordable outdoor activity for everyone in Selangor.
However, visitors planning a trip might find promotions related to travel or accommodation in the wider Ampang area through various booking platforms. For example, some travel websites or local businesses in Ampang might offer discounts on:
- Nearby Accommodation: If you're coming from further afield in Selangor or other states and wish to make a weekend of it, look out for hotel deals in Ampang.
- Dining: Restaurants and cafes in Ampang Jaya often have special offers that could be combined with your visit to Bukit Kembara Peak for a complete day out.
- Hiking Gear: Local outdoor equipment stores in Selangor may run seasonal promotions on hiking shoes, water bottles, and other essentials that would be useful for your trek.
It's always a good idea to check local tourism boards or online travel platforms for any general deals in the Ampang district that could enhance your visit to Bukit Kembara Peak. Remember, the true "special offer" of Bukit Kembara is the priceless opportunity to enjoy a beautiful, natural environment without any entry fees.

Bukit Kembara Peak Reviews
First of all, the hiking took me around 20-25 minutes to the peak, most of the times you will be climbing stairs and the real attraction is the some sort of mini damn at the foot of the hill (bcs the peak has no view). After you go straight pass the peak to the damn, make sure to take the left route as opposed to the right. Unless you wanna have a pretty rough descent. You can circle the damn in 20 minutes or faster bcs the route is clear, no obstruction or climbing needed. The return route is a little bit tiring cs you have to climb. All in all, good for beginners.
