Bukit Kembara Trailhead provides exactly that, making it a highly suitable choice for individuals or groups looking to reconnect with nature, improve their fitness, or simply enjoy a quiet moment outdoors. This article will delve into the specifics of what makes Bukit Kembara Trailhead a special place for locals, covering its location, the unique features you’ll encounter on its trails, and why it's a worthwhile addition to your Selangor hiking list.
Bukit Kembara Trailhead is conveniently located in Ulu Kelang, 68000 Ampang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. This places it within the Ampang Jaya district, making it easily accessible for residents across Ampang, Hulu Klang, and even parts of Kuala Lumpur. Its relatively close proximity to residential areas makes it a viable option for a quick morning hike or an afternoon escape into nature.
For those traveling by car, the trailhead can be reached via local roads within Ulu Kelang. However, it's important to note that parking is limited. Hikers typically park along the roadside in the vicinity of the trailhead. Given its increasing popularity among locals, it is advisable to arrive early, especially during weekends or public holidays, to secure a spot and avoid inconveniencing residents. Always be mindful of local parking regulations and ensure you do not obstruct traffic or residential access.
While there isn't direct public transport that drops you right at the trailhead, you can reach the general area of Ulu Kelang via ride-sharing services or taxis from nearby LRT stations (such as Sri Rampai or Wangsa Maju LRT stations, followed by a short drive). This provides a flexible option for those who prefer not to drive. The clear path and the established nature of the area mean that navigation to the trailhead is generally straightforward for those familiar with the Ampang Jaya region.
As a natural hiking area, Bukit Kembara Trailhead primarily serves as an access point to the forest and its trails. It does not provide commercial "services" in the traditional sense, but rather offers invaluable opportunities for recreation and connection with nature. Implicitly, it "offers" the following:
- Access to moderate hiking trails: The main "service" is providing entry to a well-defined network of trails suitable for a moderate climb, making it accessible to a wide range of fitness levels.
- Nature immersion and fresh air: It offers an ideal environment for users to immerse themselves in lush greenery, enjoy clean air, and escape the urban environment, promoting mental well-being.
- Physical exercise opportunities: The trails provide an excellent setting for cardio workouts, strength building, and general physical activity amidst a natural backdrop.
- Self-guided exploration: Hikers can explore the trails at their own pace, fostering a sense of independence and adventure without the need for guides or organized tours.
- Photography opportunities: The scenic beauty, including the mini waterfall and the serene lake, provides ample opportunities for nature photography.
- Quiet contemplation: Being a lesser-known trail, it offers a more peaceful and tranquil environment compared to more crowded hiking spots, ideal for quiet reflection.
It is important to note that, as mentioned in reviews, there are no public toilet facilities directly at the trailhead, so hikers are advised to plan accordingly before arriving.
- Peaceful and Less Crowded Atmosphere: A significant highlight of Bukit Kembara is its status as a "lesser-known trail." This translates to a more peaceful and tranquil hiking experience compared to highly frequented spots, allowing for a deeper connection with nature.
- Moderate Climb with Quick Ascents: The trail offers a good, moderate workout. While the initial ascend can be quick and steep, it is generally not prolonged, making it manageable for those with a reasonable level of fitness. The overall hike (including the loop around the dam) can take around 2.5 hours.
- Scenic Rewards Beyond the Peak: Unlike some hikes where the peak is the only reward, Bukit Kembara's true beauties lie beyond its initial summit. Hikers are encouraged to continue past the "peak" (which may not offer a view) to discover a captivating mini waterfall and a serene, almost mysterious-looking lake with a platform. These natural features provide picturesque and rewarding destinations.
- Varied Terrain and Aids: The trails feature varied terrain, including rugged paths and sections with ropes to assist in climbing, adding an element of adventure and challenge. This varied landscape keeps the hike interesting and engaging.
- Loop Option Around the Dam/Lake: The ability to make a loop around the dam/lake area offers a clear, enjoyable path after the initial climb, allowing for a diverse and fulfilling hiking experience.
- Lush Greenery and Forest Immersion: The entire trail is enveloped by natural forest, providing ample shade and a refreshing environment, making the hike enjoyable even on warmer days.
As a natural public hiking area, Bukit Kembara Trailhead does not engage in commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. There are no entry fees or paid services directly offered by the trailhead.
However, its inherent "offers" to the local community are significant:
- Free Access to Nature: The most compelling "promotion" is the free and open access to a beautiful natural environment. This makes it an incredibly cost-effective way for locals to engage in outdoor physical activity and enjoy the serenity of nature.
- Year-Round Availability: The trails are accessible throughout the year (though caution is advised during and after heavy rain), providing a consistent option for recreation whenever locals wish to hike.
- Mental and Physical Wellness: The opportunity to engage in physical exercise and de-stress in a peaceful natural setting is a continuous "benefit" or "offer" for the health and well-being of the community.
- Unique Discoveries: The unexpected beauty of the mini waterfall and the serene lake, which are not immediately apparent, serve as delightful "bonuses" for those who explore beyond the initial peak.
Any community-organized hiking events or group activities would be independent of the trailhead itself, and information would be shared through local hiking groups or social media channels. The primary draw remains the inherent value of the natural experience it provides without a price tag.
Bukit Kembara Trailhead, being a natural outdoor area and public access point, does not have a direct contact office or a specific phone number for inquiries. It operates as an open-access recreational space.
For general concerns related to the maintenance of public recreational areas or local environmental matters in Ampang Jaya, you might direct inquiries to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya - MPAJ), as they are typically the governing body for such public spaces.

Bukit Kembara Trailhead Reviews
Lesser known trail. Gives a good hike. Return and around the dam takes 2.5 hours. A moderate climb. Parking is limited. There's no public toilet so please ease yourself before hiking. I find this a peaceful hike. Worth it. Bring walking sticks during rainy season. Roads are rugged with ropes to climb.
Jun 02, 2025 · Wil Liam ChooA nice, short hike that does not stop (and should not stop) at the peak. The trail ascend pretty quickly, right in the beginning but it did not last for long. Once you have reached the peak, you probably will be like, "that's it?? not even a view??", but please do not stop there and return but instead hike more as beyond it lie the beauties; the mini waterfall and the serene yet somehow mysterious-looking lake with a platform that makes me wonder, what's the story?
Sep 17, 2024 · Wan NurhazrinaGreat hike, around 1 hour to reach the peak and 15-20 minutes to reach the dam. Around 3 hour in total for the whole hike. It was not crowded and I didn’t see any leeches 😄
Jan 25, 2025 · C. SamStarted of with a steep hike for around 10 minutes then it gradually became more flat. There will be more elevation. Once you are closer to the lake it means it gets easier from there. Serene old dam with gorgeous views. Worth the hike. Even saw some nature is metal moment.
May 24, 2024 · Lawsenza SecretEnjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon hike that's perfect for families. Suitable for kids aged 8 and above, this trail requires only sturdy footwear—no additional gear necessary. When you reach the junction where the path descends, choose either route to reach the lake. At the lake's end, a charming mini waterfall awaits your discovery. No fees. Parking near the red shrine.
