SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow Introduce
Selamat datang, history enthusiasts and curious explorers of Selangor! Have you ever wondered about the rich past that shaped our state, especially the legacy of its vast plantations? There’s a fascinating piece of that history waiting to be admired on Carey Island: the SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow. This iconic building offers a captivating glimpse into the colonial era and the lives of those who managed the thriving rubber and palm oil estates.
The SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow, as its name suggests, was originally built with distinction. It wasn't just any residence; it was specifically constructed to house the most senior residential staff of the island's plantations, known as the Resident General Manager (RGM). Completed and first occupied in 1926, this stately two-storey building served as a testament to the importance of the plantation industry in Selangor’s development. Imagine the stories these walls could tell, spanning decades of management and significant historical periods!
Although the bungalow was last occupied by a manager in 2001, its story didn't end there. Thankfully, this historic building underwent a commendable restoration, preserving its architectural grandeur and significance. It has since been reopened as a guesthouse, primarily for the senior management and staff of Sime Darby Plantation, ensuring its continued care and appreciation. As one visitor noted with satisfaction, "It is great that this historic building has been restored and kept in great condition." This commitment to heritage preservation allows us to appreciate a tangible link to Selangor's past.
While access to the interior is generally restricted to Sime Darby staff, the exterior and its surroundings are often viewable, offering ample opportunities to admire its unique architecture and expansive gardens. This makes it a rewarding destination for anyone keen on understanding the historical backdrop of our beloved Selangor.
Location and Accessibility
The SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow is uniquely located on Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia, with the address listed as "Unnamed Rd, 42000 Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia." Carey Island itself is situated off the coast of Selangor and is accessible by road, connected to the mainland by bridges. For us locals in Selangor, reaching Carey Island typically involves driving. From major urban centers like Shah Alam, Klang, or Kuala Lumpur, you would head towards Banting and then follow the signs to Carey Island. The journey offers scenic views of palm oil plantations that dominate the island's landscape, giving you a sense of the historical context even before you arrive.
Once on Carey Island, navigating to the SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow requires careful attention, as it is located "within Sime Darby's private property." This means it's not a publicly advertised or readily accessible tourist attraction in the conventional sense. Visitors should be aware that the bungalow is not open for general public entry into its interior. As one reviewer mentioned, "We visited this historic building and although we could not enter, took many photos of the building as well as the grounds." This suggests that while direct entry might be restricted, viewing the exterior and appreciating the grandeur of the building and its "huge and well kept garden" from the perimeter is often possible.
Therefore, while it's accessible by road, intending visitors should manage their expectations regarding internal access. It is advisable to consider this a drive-by historical viewing experience rather than a walk-through tour, unless specific arrangements or events permit otherwise. This particular aspect makes it a unique, somewhat exclusive historical landmark to appreciate for those willing to make the journey to Carey Island.

Promotions or Special Offers
As the SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow is a historical landmark primarily serving as a private guesthouse for Sime Darby Plantation's senior management and staff, it does not typically offer public "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. General public access to the interior is restricted, and there are no direct entry fees or advertised public tours.
The "promotion" for locals in Selangor lies in the opportunity to witness a well-preserved piece of our state's history. It is a historical architectural marvel that can be admired from the exterior and its grounds, offering a unique photographic opportunity and a direct link to the colonial plantation era. While there might not be discounts, the experience of appreciating this heritage building and its beautiful setting on Carey Island is a valuable offering in itself for those interested in local history and architecture.
Any potential for more direct engagement (e.g., specific heritage open days) would be entirely at the discretion of Sime Darby Plantation and would likely be communicated through their corporate channels rather than general tourism platforms. Therefore, managing expectations regarding public access and expecting to primarily view the exterior is key.
Contact Information
As the SD Guthrie VIP Bungalow is located on private property and primarily serves as a guesthouse for Sime Darby Plantation, direct public contact information for the bungalow itself is not generally available. It is not managed as a public tourist attraction with its own visitor centre or direct phone line.
For any inquiries related to Sime Darby Plantation's historical properties or corporate social responsibility initiatives that might involve public viewing opportunities (though rare for this specific bungalow), it would be best to try contacting Sime Darby Plantation Berhad's corporate office or public relations department. However, it's important to note that direct public inquiries about visiting the VIP Bungalow may not yield positive results for interior access.

It’s a compelling reason to explore our own backyard and appreciate the hidden historical gems within our beautiful state.
