Sumi-Ka • SS15/4 • Subang Jaya specializes in delivering an authentic Japanese yakitori experience, offering a focused menu of expertly grilled skewers and complementary dishes. Here’s a breakdown of the services you can expect:
Authentic Yakitori: The core offering is a wide variety of charcoal-grilled skewers (yakitori), including various cuts of chicken (thigh, skin, breast, cartilage/nankotsu, gizzard/sunazuri, chicken butt/bonhiri), pork belly, beef tongue (gyutan), and lamb. Customers praise the quality, highlighting "chicken thigh & skin," "pork belly," and that "nonkotsu is a must order!!"
Freshly Grilled to Order: Reviews emphasize the "BBQ aroma" and the ability to "see the chef cooks the sticks" from the bar seats, indicating that skewers are freshly prepared upon order, ensuring optimal flavour and tenderness.
Complimentary Cabbage Salad: A signature offering is the "fresh refillable cabbage" served as a complimentary side. This crunchy, refreshing accompaniment is perfect for balancing the richness of the grilled meats.
Signature Side Dishes: Beyond skewers, Sumi-Ka offers popular Japanese side dishes. Customer favourites include "butter sweet potato" (described as "yummy" and "loved"), "roasted onigiri rice," and potato salad. Other options mentioned in reviews include edamame, grilled mushrooms, and various rice bowls like oyakodon and yakitori don.
Alcoholic Beverages: The restaurant is noted for offering a "wideeeee range of alcohol," which takes up "almost half of the menu." This suggests a focus on providing suitable pairings for yakitori, including sake, as is typical in a traditional Japanese izakaya setting.
Cash-Only Payment: It's important to note that Sumi-Ka "only accepts cash as payment," a traditional approach that customers should be aware of before visiting.
Reservation Recommended: Due to its small size and popularity, it's advised to "make a reservation" to guarantee a seat and avoid disappointment, especially for prime dining times.
While a "non-halal" establishment, Sumi-Ka clearly delivers an immersive and authentic Japanese izakaya and yakitori experience that is highly regarded by its patrons.
Sumi-Ka • SS15/4 • Subang Jaya boasts several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its charm and reputation as a top Japanese dining spot:
Authentic "Old School" Yakitori Vibe: The restaurant's most prominent feature is its traditional, "no fuss" ambiance that "reminds me of Japan." This unpretentious, somewhat smoky (due to the grilling) environment creates an immersive experience that transports diners to a genuine Japanese izakaya.
Charcoal Grill Action: The "BBQ aroma hits your nose" upon entering, and the "best seats are the bar seats, you get to see the chef cooks the sticks." This direct view of the charcoal grilling process is a key highlight, providing entertainment and assurance of freshness.
High-Quality Skewers: Customers consistently praise the "yummy" yakitori, with particular mentions of "pork belly," "chicken thigh & skin," and "nonkotsu." The focus is on perfectly grilled meats and other ingredients, cooked to achieve optimal flavour and texture.
Affordable Pricing: Despite the quality, reviewers note that the "price is good, not overpriced unlike other places," making authentic yakitori more accessible to a broader range of diners.
Unique Side Dishes: The "butter sweet potato" is frequently highlighted as a must-try, described as "yummy" and a favourite. The complimentary, "fresh refillable cabbage" is also a notable feature, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the grilled items.
Intimate and Lively Atmosphere: The restaurant is described as "small & has limited seats" and can get "smokey & it’s kinda warm inside." While this might sound like a downside to some, it contributes to the cozy, bustling, and authentic izakaya feel, especially when packed with diners and often Japanese customers.
Dedicated to Non-Halal Options: For those seeking pork and other non-halal Japanese dishes, Sumi-Ka caters specifically to this segment, offering items like pork belly and potentially other non-halal skewers, which can be a key differentiator in the local market.
These features combine to make Sumi-Ka a unique and highly recommended destination for an authentic yakitori experience in Subang Jaya.
As an established, traditional Japanese yakitori restaurant known for its authentic experience and quality, Sumi-Ka • SS15/4 • Subang Jaya does not typically engage in conventional "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a fast-food chain or a newly opened establishment might. Consistent Quality at Good Prices: Reviewers mention that "price is good, not overpriced unlike other places," which in itself is a continuous "offer" of value, providing high-quality yakitori at competitive rates for the segment.
Complimentary Refillable Cabbage: The "fresh refillable cabbage" is a direct, ongoing "special offer" that adds significant value to the meal, providing a refreshing and healthy complement to the rich skewers without extra cost.
Early Bird Advantage: While not a discount, the advice to "Go early before the choice of meat (mainly breast) gets sold out" acts as an unofficial "promotion" for early diners, ensuring they have access to the full range of popular items.
Authentic Experience: The "old school no fuss yakitori shop" that "reminds me of Japan" is a unique experiential "offer" that cannot be quantified in monetary terms. For aficionados of Japanese culture and cuisine, this authenticity is a significant draw.
Seasonal/Limited Skewers: While not explicitly stated, traditional yakitori restaurants might occasionally feature seasonal ingredients or special cuts of meat, which could be seen as limited-time "offers" for their regular patrons.

Once you walk in the shop, BBQ aroma hits your nose. That’s when you know it’s good. Old school no fuss yakitori shop, reminds me of Japan. Best seats are the bar seats, you get to see the chef cooks the sticks.Price is good, not overpriced unlike other places. Go early before the choice of meat (mainly breast) gets sold out. We’ve ordered the butter sweet potato, roasted onigiri rice and all flavours of the chicken breast skewers, nonkotsu is a must order!! Also comes with the fresh refillable cabbage. All are yums!
Mar 30, 2025 · Cherry TreeEnjoyed their yakitori. Their pork belly was yummy but slightly salty. Enjoyed their chicken thigh & skin too. I love the butter sweet potato!! Didn’t like the rice ball tho. The place is small & has limited seats so do make a reservation. It gets smokey & it’s kinda warm inside. Paid RM50 per pax for 5 diners.
Sep 19, 2024 · AuroraNestled in Subang, this authentic Japanese yakitori spot holds a special place in your heart, even after 8 years. The taste remains impeccable, a testament to the chefs' exceptional skills. Every skewer showcases expertly grilled meats, cooked to perfection. You particularly relish the carefully prepared and seasoned chicken internal organs—liver, heart, skins, neck meat, and blood vessels—each bursting with flavor. A must-order is their beef soup, best enjoyed with a hint of wasabi, elevating the meat's taste to new heights. This restaurant truly excels in delivering an unforgettable dining experience.
