It’s an experience that leaves you feeling truly connected to nature and amazed by its beauty.
The journey to Air Terjun Pelangi is an adventure in itself, making it a popular spot for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. It’s a place where you can switch off from the daily grind and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Malaysian jungle. Many locals have shared their amazing experiences, highlighting the unique thrill of the journey and the breathtaking reward at the end. If you’re looking for a refreshing and memorable day out with friends or family, this waterfall should definitely be on your list.
Sungai Lembing Air Terjun Pelangi is located in Pahang, Malaysia, specifically near the quaint town of Sungai Lembing. While the address might simply state "Pahang, Malaysia," the actual access to the waterfall is a bit more involved, adding to its adventurous appeal. The waterfall itself is about 18 kilometers from Sungai Lembing town. To reach this natural wonder, you’ll typically need to arrange for a 4x4 vehicle, which is the standard mode of transport for getting through the rugged terrain of the jungle. This off-road drive takes about 30 to 40 minutes, winding through dense rainforests and crossing several small streams, offering a thrilling ride even before you start your hike.
Once the 4x4 drops you off at the trailhead, the true trekking adventure begins. You'll embark on a hike that usually takes around 35 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace. The path can be rocky and steep, especially as you get closer to the waterfall, requiring careful footing. It’s worth noting that the journey involves a short river crossing right at the beginning of the trail, where you might need to hold onto a rope. This immersive experience is part of what makes the trip to Air Terjun Pelangi so unique and rewarding for those who enjoy a bit of challenge in their outdoor pursuits. It's not typically recommended for the elderly or individuals with knee or foot injuries due to the challenging terrain.
While Sungai Lembing Air Terjun Pelangi is a natural site, the experience of visiting it often comes with a set of services provided by local operators to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. These services are designed to facilitate your journey through the challenging terrain and enhance your overall visit. Here’s what you can generally expect:
4x4 Transportation: Given the challenging and unpaved roads leading to the trailhead, 4x4 vehicles are essential. Local tour operators in Sungai Lembing provide these transfers, typically departing early in the morning to ensure you reach the waterfall when the rainbow is most likely to appear. This service usually includes pick-up from your accommodation in Sungai Lembing town.
Experienced Local Guides: It is highly recommended, and often part of tour packages, to go with a local guide. These guides are familiar with the terrain, know the best spots for viewing the rainbow, and can ensure your safety throughout the trek. They also often provide insights into the local flora and fauna.
Permits: For many waterfalls in Malaysia, including Air Terjun Pelangi, a permit is required to enter the protected forest reserve. Tour operators usually handle the necessary permits as part of their package, saving you the hassle.
Light Refreshments at the Waterfall: Some tour packages include light refreshments like instant noodles and hot drinks (coffee or tea) served right at the waterfall. This is a welcome treat after the trek and while you're enjoying the scenery.
Basic Facilities at Trailhead: At the starting point of the hike, there might be basic toilet facilities available (sometimes for a small fee) and the option to rent local rubber shoes (often called "Adidas Kampung") which provide excellent grip on wet rocks, as well as walking sticks.
Package Deals: Many local travel agencies and resorts in Sungai Lembing offer comprehensive tour packages that bundle accommodation, 4x4 transport, guide services, and sometimes even other local attractions like Bukit Panorama (Sunrise Hill) in Sungai Lembing.
The Sungai Lembing Air Terjun Pelangi is celebrated for several unique features that make it a truly remarkable destination:
The Iconic Rainbow Phenomenon: This is the main draw and namesake of the waterfall. Between approximately 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM, when the sun's rays hit the waterfall at just the right angle, a magnificent rainbow forms at its base. Visitors often describe seeing a full circle rainbow and sometimes even a double rainbow, a truly captivating sight that makes the challenging journey worthwhile. The mist from the waterfall acts as a prism, creating this beautiful natural light show.
Stunning 150-Meter Waterfall: Even without the rainbow, the waterfall itself is impressive. It cascades down from a height of about 150 meters, creating a powerful and beautiful display of nature's force. The water is often described as cold and refreshing, perfect for soaking in after a hike.
Invigorating Jungle Trekking: The hike to the waterfall offers an immersive jungle experience. You’ll walk through dense rainforest, encounter various flora, and navigate rocky and sometimes steep paths. The trek, while moderate, provides a good workout and a chance to truly connect with the natural environment.
Thrilling 4x4 Off-Road Ride: The journey to the trailhead via a 4x4 vehicle is an adventure in itself. Bouncing along bumpy, unpaved roads and crossing small rivers in a rugged vehicle adds an element of excitement and fun to the trip, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
Natural Spring Water Pool: At the base of the waterfall, there's a natural rock pool where visitors can take a refreshing dip. The clear, cold spring water is incredibly invigorating, especially after the hike, and provides a perfect spot to cool down and relax.
Photographic Opportunities: The natural beauty of the waterfall, coupled with the elusive rainbow, provides incredible opportunities for photography. Capturing the vibrant hues of the rainbow against the lush green backdrop is a highlight for many visitors.
While direct promotions for just the waterfall entrance aren't typically advertised, the experience of visiting Sungai Lembing Air Terjun Pelangi is often packaged as part of broader tour deals by local operators and resorts in Sungai Lembing. These packages can offer better value and convenience, especially for visitors coming from outside the immediate area.

These packages often bundle accommodation, transportation (including the 4x4 to the waterfall), guide services, and sometimes meals.
Group Booking Discounts: If you are planning to visit with a larger group, it is always worth inquiring with local tour operators about potential discounts for group bookings. Many operators are flexible and can tailor packages to suit your group's size and needs.
Seasonal Promotions: Keep an eye out for seasonal promotions, particularly during off-peak times or around local holidays, as some resorts or tour companies might offer special rates to attract visitors. Checking with local travel websites or directly contacting resorts in Sungai Lembing (such as Casa Hill Resort or Time Capsule Retreat) is a good way to find out about current offers.

Sungai Lembing Air Terjun Pelangi Reviews
Rainbow waterfall is superb, wonderful experience. Due to raining season, the water fall downpour beautifully, the water is cold. When we stand in the middle, we can see a full circle of rainbow. And double rainbow due to reflection. However, the guide told us that you may not see rainbow if it is cloudy.Thank God for beautiful weather when we went.We took a 4 wheel drive to go through the jungle, crossing rivers, riding on bumpy road for about 30 - 40 min. When you reach the place, you need to hike about 35 min to reach the rainbow waterfall but all the hard work paid for it when you see the rainbow.Make sure you go and soak into the water.. it's so fun
Feb 24, 2023 · Ng CindyGreat hiking experience to the waterfall. Natural spring water with luck you get to see the rainbow 🌈.Myself managed to catch a section of the rainbow. (Refer photo)The path is rocky and steep when you are near the top. Not meant for elderly or individuals with knee or foot injuries.
May 31, 2023 · WSAmazing place! To get there, you’ll need to do a trek (~45min) that includes cross the river, some small streams, trail with lots of tree roots and slippery rocks. We were here during the dry period, the waterfall was more like a spray of water rather than gushing with water. Still the view is worth the trek!
Oct 16, 2023 · Siyin TanThe view so beautiful, you can see the rainbow sharp at 9:30 am and the rainbow will going down after that , you have to hiking about 40 minutes . You guys should visit here ! It so worth it. caution with the rocks it so slippery , have fun and take care !
Sep 20, 2022 · Nur HafizaI've heard and read a lot of great stories about Sungai Lembing Waterfall and have always wanted to go there myself. We booked our accommodation ourselves, and then booked the trip to the waterfall through the accommodation where we were staying. The package included the driver picking us up at 5:30am and taking us to the nearby hawker center for a self-paid breakfast. He then took us up to Sunrise Hill where we should have been able to see a "sea of clouds" and the sunrise (unfortunately, it was a cloudy morning and we got to see neither). Only after that, we were to take an one hour of bumpy ride in the truck towards the gathering spot where we would then need to hike on foot. The gathering spot has a toilet, and you can rent a pair of Adidas Kampung for a nominal fee if you do not have a suitable pair of climbing shoes. The trail started by immediately crossing a rather rapid stream, which I think would be challenging for young kids and older folks. After that, it was a rather chill jungle trekking for about 15 minutes, before reaching another challenging part of the journey. It was moderately hard near the waterfall, where you had to traverse through wet moss-covered rocks while holding onto anchored ropes before finally reaching the destination. We were quite early when we reached the area as there were still not a lot of people around, which let us pick a nice spot by the side of the water pool beneath the waterfall, where we could dip our feet into the cold water while comfortably sitting on a flat rock.Sungai Lembing Waterfall is truly one of the most magnificent waterfalls that I've seen so far in my life. The water flow from the river on top must be quite mild, therefore instead of a stream of water directly falling from the top to the pool below, it is scattered into tiny droplets by the protruding rocks on the cliff wall, forming a misty curtain of water. I believe it is exactly this phenomenon, which creates a humid environment that is perfect for a rainbow to form. However, quite unfortunately, it was still rather cloudy when we were there, and we were unable to see any rainbow. Instead, we focused on immersing ourselves in the magnificent view of the fall and the cool surroundings, relaxing our feet in the cold water while enjoying the simple complimentary meal brought by our tour guide.Overall, it was a worthwhile experience, especially for a nature lover like me. I wouldn't mind coming to this place again if I got the chance to.
