Windmills

WPG9+XW, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia

3.0
Perhentian islands are the cream of Malaysia. But this windmill spot is the most boring place in these beautiful islands. There is nothing much to do in this place. The only good thing about this trek is that I spotted Pitcher plant which I have never seen before in my life. I have posted a pic of the same. - Salai arun CA

### Introduction / Overview

For adventurous souls and nature enthusiasts visiting the Perhentian Islands in Terengganu, the trek to the Windmills on Pulau Perhentian Kecil offers a unique dimension to your island experience. While the Perhentian Islands are renowned for their pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and laid-back atmosphere, the Windmills site presents an opportunity to explore the island's inland beauty and enjoy panoramic views that truly capture the essence of this tropical paradise. It's a journey that reveals a different side of Perhentian Kecil, moving from the sandy shores into a lush, natural landscape.

Often sought out by hikers and curious travellers, the Windmills site, though no longer actively generating electricity from the turbines, remains a point of interest for its elevated vantage point. Reviews from past visitors paint a varied picture, with some describing it as having "a really nice view," making the trek worthwhile for the scenery. Others have even had the unique experience of spotting rare flora, such as the "Pitcher plant," adding an element of discovery to the adventure. While some practical considerations regarding the path and amenities exist, the Windmills trek undeniably offers a distinct perspective of Pulau Perhentian Kecil for those eager to explore beyond the beaches.

### Location and Accessibility

The Windmills are located on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia, with the specific geographical marker being WPG9+XW. This destination is part of the iconic Perhentian Islands archipelago, situated off the coast of Terengganu. To reach Pulau Perhentian Kecil itself, visitors typically take a ferry or speed boat from Kuala Besut Jetty on the mainland. The boat ride usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes, landing either at Long Beach or Coral Bay, which are the main hubs on Perhentian Kecil.

Once on Perhentian Kecil, reaching the Windmills involves a trek, as there is no direct road access for vehicles. The path can be accessed from various points, notably from Long Beach and Rosemary's. While some directions might indicate "Wind turbines 100m," visitors should be aware that these signs can be misleading, and the actual walk might be longer, perhaps around "500m from there" if coming from Rosemary's. The path, while generally walkable with "flipflops" for experienced island trekkers, is better navigated with "closed shoes," especially if there has been prior rain, as it can get "tricky." Signage might be minimal ("no signs"), but "all paths going in the general direction, will eventually get you there." Some sections may involve an uphill climb, and parts of the old stairs leading down to the water are "falling apart and are blocked off," so caution is advised.
