This article aims to provide a comprehensive and honest overview of Mama's Chalet, from its idyllic location and accessibility to the services and features that define a stay here, all viewed from the perspective of a local user considering their next island getaway.
Pulau Perhentian Besar is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and lush tropical landscapes, making it a premier destination in Malaysia. Mama's Chalet, a family-run business, embodies the laid-back island vibe, offering a distinct alternative to larger, more commercial resorts. While experiences can vary, as with any island accommodation, Mama's Chalet is known for its incredible sea views and its direct connection to the natural wonders of the Perhentians. We understand that choosing the right island retreat involves balancing expectations with realities, and this guide is designed to help you decide if Mama's Chalet is your perfect match for an authentic Terengganu island adventure.
Our goal is to give you all the information you need to make an informed choice, drawing from the experiences of real guests. We'll explore the unique aspects that Mama's Chalet brings to the table, including its dining options and its proximity to some of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Let's dive into what makes Mama's Chalet a consideration for your next memorable stay in Terengganu.
Mama's Chalet boasts an enviable location at Lot 137, Kg. Seberang Genting, Pulau Perhentian Besar, Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia, within the 22300 postal code area. Pulau Perhentian Besar is one of two main islands (the other being Pulau Perhentian Kecil) forming the Perhentian Islands, a cluster of islands off the coast of Terengganu. These islands are accessible primarily by boat from Kuala Besut Jetty.
To reach Mama's Chalet, visitors typically take a fast boat from Kuala Besut Jetty. The journey across the sea to Pulau Perhentian Besar usually takes around 35 to 40 minutes, offering scenic views of the open water. Upon arrival at Pulau Perhentian Besar, guests are usually dropped off at a specific jetty or directly at the resort's beachfront, depending on the tide and specific arrangements. As mentioned in a review, Mama's Chalet is located between Coral View Island Resort and Paradise Island Resort, and right next to The Barat hotel. This proximity means that while Mama's Chalet has its own direct sea access, pristine white sand beaches are just a short 2-minute walk to the right, notably near Coral View, where fantastic snorkeling opportunities abound without the need for a boat trip.
Given its island location, ground transportation on Pulau Perhentian Besar is limited to walking paths, jungle trails, and water taxis (boat taxis). There are no roads or cars on the island, contributing to its tranquil and natural charm. This means getting around the island, especially to different beaches or snorkeling spots, would involve walking or taking a water taxi, which are readily available. The address within Kg. Seberang Genting signifies a settled area on the island, implying a degree of existing infrastructure, albeit island-style. The remoteness of an island location also means that facilities like shops are not as abundant as on the mainland, a point highlighted by a past customer regarding the lack of a nearby shop for drinking water.
Mama's Chalet, as a resort hotel on an island, offers a range of services designed to provide a comfortable yet rustic island experience. Based on customer reviews and typical island resort offerings, here’s what you can expect:
- Accommodation: Provides various chalet types, including Standard Quard Sea View, Standard Double Sea View, Standard Double Garden View (some with fan, others with air-conditioning), Standard Triple Garden View, and Family rooms. Rooms are equipped with private bathrooms, and some come with hot showers and air-conditioning. Balconies or terraces are featured in some chalets, offering garden or sea views.
- Dining: Features an on-site restaurant (Mama's Restaurant) that serves a variety of food, including fresh fish barbecue every night. Reviews suggest the restaurant offers a diverse choice of dishes.
- Snorkeling and Activities: Facilitates snorkeling trips, often included in packages. The location itself provides direct access to excellent snorkeling spots, particularly near Coral View.
- Laundry Service: Convenient laundry service is available on the premises for guests' needs.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: While some reviews mention issues, complimentary Wi-Fi is generally offered, though availability and reliability might vary, especially on an island.
- Room Service: Meals from the restaurant can be delivered to your room.
- Check-in/Check-out: Standard check-in is from 2:00 PM (until 6:00 PM) and check-out is by 11:00 AM (or 12:00 PM), with possibilities for early check-in or late check-out at an additional cost.
- Basic Amenities: Rooms are provided with basic necessities, including towels and free toiletries in selected rooms.
- Transfer Services: Mama's Chalet or associated entities often offer boat transfers from Kuala Besut Jetty to the island.
Mama's Chalet on Pulau Perhentian Besar stands out with several notable features and highlights, as gleaned from customer feedback:
- Incredible Sea Views: Many rooms, particularly the sea view chalets, offer breathtaking views of the ocean, providing a truly immersive island experience.
- Proximity to Pristine Beaches and Snorkeling: While Mama's Chalet itself might not have a traditional 'beachfront' suitable for long strolls, it offers direct access to swimming spots. Crucially, a short 2-minute walk leads to white sand beaches, notably near Coral View, which is celebrated for its fantastic snorkeling opportunities directly from the shore without needing a boat. This makes it a prime spot for marine enthusiasts.
- Family-Run Business: The fact that it is a family-run business contributes to a personalized and potentially more authentic and warm guest experience, often highlighted by a friendly atmosphere.
- Spacious and Clean Rooms (for some): Positive reviews indicate that some rooms, particularly the 4-pax options, are clean and spacious, providing comfortable accommodation for families or groups.
- On-Site Restaurant with BBQ: The presence of a dedicated restaurant offering a varied menu and fresh fish barbecue every night is a significant convenience, allowing guests to dine without leaving the resort. Some reviews also suggest it can be more affordable than neighbouring establishments.
- Village Ambiance: The chalets are described as having a simple, unique Malay wooden house design, contributing to a "village" feel, with opportunities to relax under trees and enjoy the natural surroundings.
- Physical Activities: Guests can enjoy physical activities like jogging and walking around the chalet area, embracing the natural environment.
However, it is important to acknowledge some aspects that guests have highlighted, which can also be considered in context:
- Varied Room Conditions: While some rooms are praised for cleanliness and space, other reviews mention dark, grubby rooms with stained sheets and dirty bathrooms, indicating inconsistency.
- Inconsistent Hot Water/Wi-Fi: Issues with non-functional water heaters and unreliable or absent Wi-Fi during stays have been reported, which can be inconvenient for guests.
- Limited On-Island Amenities: As is common with island living, access to shops and diverse dining options outside the resort is limited, a point that some guests found challenging.
- Construction Noise: Past experiences of construction work occurring early in the morning have impacted the peaceful environment for some guests.

Mama's Chalet presents itself as a suitable option for locals in Terengganu who are seeking an authentic and immersive island experience on Pulau Perhentian Besar, with a few important considerations. For those who appreciate a family-run establishment with a strong connection to local culture, this resort offers a more rustic and personal touch compared to larger, more commercial hotels. The "village condition" and Malay wooden house design can appeal to locals looking for a familiar and comfortable environment that reflects traditional Malaysian hospitality.
The unparalleled access to incredible snorkeling spots and pristine white sand beaches just a short walk away is a significant draw. Terengganu locals often cherish the natural beauty of their state, and Mama's Chalet’s proximity to these natural wonders makes it ideal for spontaneous snorkeling adventures or simply enjoying the breathtaking sea views. The on-site restaurant, especially with its fresh fish barbecue, caters to local tastes and offers a convenient dining option, potentially at a more reasonable price than some neighboring resorts, which is a key factor for budget-conscious travellers.
However, it's also important for locals to set appropriate expectations, particularly regarding the standard of facilities and services, which may vary. The island setting means amenities like consistent hot water, reliable Wi-Fi, and easily accessible shops might not be on par with mainland standards. For Terengganu residents who are accustomed to basic island living or are seeking a genuine "back to nature" experience without excessive luxury, Mama's Chalet can be an excellent fit. It provides an opportunity to reconnect with the natural beauty of Pulau Perhentian Besar, enjoy marine activities, and experience a relaxed, family-oriented island stay that offers value for an authentic island getaway.

Mama's Chalet Reviews
We spent 4 days in April 2025. Rooms were clean and spacious, especially the 4 pax.Sea view is incredible, you can swim here however it's not a real beach.Better walk 2 minutes to the right and you will have a choice of white sand beaches, especially Coral view where snorkeling is crazy without need to take a boat.Service is great, the restaurant is cheaper than The Barat hotel just beside Mama. The choice will please everyone and you have fresh fish barbecue every night. The fact that it is a family-run business makes it an ideal choice.
Apr 18, 2025 · Jean NemarOverall was really disappointed with this hotel. It was so so expensive for a 1 star hotel experience! The room was very dark and grubby with stains on the bed sheets and a dirty bathroom. The water heater in my room didn't work so I had cold showers for the entirety - not the end of the world as it was hot but it would have been nice to have a warm shower occasionally. Bugs absolutely everywhere! No WiFi in the entire hotel as they were replacing the router for my entire stay which was very inconvenient, I had to go next door to The Barat to use the WiFi. No drinking water provided which was terrible, especially as there is no shop nearby on the island and the tap water is off limits. The restaurant was terrible, the food was overpriced and was some of the worst food I've had while travelling - usually this would not be a problem as you would go to a different food establishment but of course this is island living so there are no other food places except for the Barat next door which did offer lovely food at a cheaper price. The staff started doing construction work at 6am every day which was extremely annoying and messy in front of my room.Overall, I would never stay here again! I would definitely spend a few extra pennies and go to the Barat next door which seemed lovely and very friendly with good food.
May 04, 2025 · Lauren BaronHad a wonderful and peaceful stay at Mama Chalet, Pulau Perhentian Besar. If you’re looking for a relaxing spot away from the busier Long Beach, this is definitely a great choice.Chalet sangat bersih dan selesa. The room was well-kept, tidy, and complete with all the basic necessities. The toilet was exceptionally clean — no stains or unpleasant odours. Kebersihan memang terbaik. The surroundings were also well-maintained, giving a very calm and homely vibe.Staff pun sangat friendly dan banyak membantu sepanjang kami di sana. Their hospitality memang buat rasa selesa and welcome. However, there are a few things that could be improved.Firstly, no drinking water or Coway/RO water was provided at the canteen or common areas, which might be a bit inconvenient for guests — especially those on a full board package.I also took the full board package, which included all meals and was supposed to include a BBQ dinner on the second night. Unfortunately, no BBQ, and we were only served fried fish and sotong celup tepung. Additionally, most meals (lunch and dinner) were very fish-heavy — would be great to have more variety. For the snorkelling trip, the package mentioned 5 points, but on the actual day, we only covered 4 points. Not a huge issue, but it would be better if the package details were consistent with the actual experience.
Jun 08, 2025 · RedgojiThis review is for the restaurant. It seems like ordering air suam & ais kosong is not favoured by the staff. Staff ignored our order twice for 2nd cup of those drinks. Mind you we also ordered foods and would pay for those drinks. When it comes to foreigners the staff were so attentive and friendly ya.
May 02, 2025 · Hani KSo far okay..staff all helpful. Room was clean and InsyaAllah will repeat again. Nice view. Came 1 family with kids. Book 2 studio seaview..
