鮨 おり Sushi ORI (Chef ORI) is celebrated for several unique features and highlights that set it apart in Kuala Lumpur’s competitive fine dining scene:
- Masterful Omakase Experience: Chef Ori is an "immaculate artist at the very top of his game," renowned for delivering a consistent, high-quality omakase experience. This isn't just a meal; it's described as a "performance for the eyes and the tastebuds," where his skill elevates even seemingly ordinary dishes, like chawanmushi, into something extraordinary, akin to eating cream.
- Exceptional Freshness and Seasonality: The restaurant prides itself on using "undoubtedly fresh" fish, meticulously sourced based on its seasonality to ensure peak flavour. Ingredients, including fish, condiments, spices, and even tableware, are hand-picked and imported directly from Japan, arriving three times a week. This commitment guarantees the authenticity and quality of every dish served.
- Traditional Edo-Style Sushi: A significant highlight is the use of **red vinegar (akazu)** for the sushi rice (shari), a hallmark of traditional Edo-style sushi. This secret mix, made from sake lees, imparts a unique, well-rounded, and richer flavour to the rice, which perfectly complements the fresh seafood and enhances the overall sushi experience. The sushi rice is carefully prepared to be soft and full-bodied.
- Engaging Chef Interaction: For those seated at the sushi counter, Chef Ori is often described as "entertaining, informative and thoroughly engaging." He shares anecdotes about his culinary journey and meticulously explains each dish, adding a personal touch that makes the dining experience truly memorable. However, some past experiences mention that he might occasionally show preference or more interaction with Japanese customers, which is a point to be mindful of.
- Intimate and Newly Renovated Space: The restaurant offers a "nicely newly renovated space" with a limited number of counter seats (around 8), fostering an intimate dining atmosphere. This small setting allows for a personalized interaction with the chef and a focused appreciation of the culinary artistry. Private rooms are also available for those who prefer a more secluded experience.
- Longevity and Consistent Quality: Chef Ori has maintained a remarkable longevity and consistent quality in the Malaysian culinary scene, earning a strong reputation and a loyal following among sushi and sashimi enthusiasts. His dedication and expertise are evident in every meticulously crafted piece.
- Aesthetic Presentation: Beyond taste, the sushi at Sushi ORI is "both delicious and aesthetically pleasing," often served with expertly crafted Japanese artisan dishware, engaging all five senses in the dining experience.
鮨 おり Sushi ORI (Chef ORI) primarily focuses on its premium omakase experience, and as such, does not typically advertise broad, public promotions in the way a casual dining spot might. However, potential special offers or arrangements might include:
- Tiered Omakase Menus: The restaurant offers various omakase courses at different price points for both lunch and dinner (e.g., Omakase Kohaku, Omakase, Botan, Ruri for dinner; Omakase, Kurumi, Anzu for lunch). This allows diners to choose an experience that aligns with their budget and desired level of culinary exploration.
- Special Omakase Options: For those seeking a higher quality experience with specially sourced ingredients, a "Special Omakase" requiring a one-week advance booking and a deposit upon booking is available, with higher price tiers (e.g., RM850++/pax for 2 hours, RM1180++/pax for 3 hours).
- Birthday/Anniversary Dessert Plates: The restaurant can prepare special dessert plates for customers celebrating birthdays or anniversaries, provided this is requested in the reservation comments in advance.
- Private Party Bookings: For larger groups (more than 8 people) or those wishing to book the entire counter (8 people), private party menus and arrangements can be made by contacting the restaurant directly.
Given the exclusive nature of Sushi ORI, it's always advisable for locals to directly contact the restaurant for the most current information regarding any seasonal offerings, special menus, or specific booking requirements. While explicit "promotions" in the traditional sense might be rare, the value lies in the curated, high-quality dining experience itself.

鮨 おり Sushi ORI ( Chef ORI ) Reviews
His food has always been good. Nicely newly renovated space. But sometimes he gets distracted whenever he has Japanese customers, he tends to ignore others or somewhat minimal interaction other than his Japanese customers. He would always serve his Japanese first, or make for them separately then prepare bulk for everyone else. Rice is cold also didn’t replace. Green tea doesn’t get replaced even when it’s cold.
Apr 20, 2025 · Celery GChef Ori is an immaculate artist at the very top of his game. There are many omakase chefs in Malaysia but none with the longevity and consistent quality like him. The whole omakase experience was a performance for the eyes and the tastebuds. His skill lies in elevating even ordinary dishes like chawanmushi into a completely new stratosphere. The consistency of the egg was so smooth it was like eating cream. Incredible. All of the fish served as sashimi or sushi was undoubtedly fresh and each was sourced based on their seasonality to ensure peak flavour. Chef himself was entertaining, informative and thoroughly engaging. 10/10, as always.
May 10, 2025 · Victor ChangThis was a great learning experience where I had essentially sampled all the fancy stuff displayed in glass cases labelled 'don't touch/photograph' and more. In just two hours, I was able to experience:- Palette cleanser ginger that was soft and imparted such a gentle flavour,- Mustard that was mellow in heat but had a strong sweet and umami taste,- Freshly grated wasabi, which added just a touch of spice without being overpowering at all,- Octopus, while ordinarily tough and rubbery, that was made so tender after being massaged for a long time,- The intricate preparation of dishes whose ingredients come from various prefectures- The delicate the texture of fresh, seasonal fish that just melts in your mouth, and- A literal explosion of juiciness from top quality fruits. While the food served were undoubtedly of premium quality, I felt that it focused more on texture than flavour - I personally found the light and delicate flavours to be lacking, but it may suit those with a more refined palette.I felt that the service could also be improved as I had my conversation interrupted multiple times when they chose to clear the plates in between, rather than around, the person I was speaking to. Their presence felt excessive as they would refill my green tea when it was still 3/4-full and pass over plates from the chef that were already placed within arms' reach. All this made for a rather stiff and impersonal dining experience.Regardless, Chef Ori was absolutely lovely and worked hard to ensure my evening was as comfortable as possible. His passion for the craft was clear and it was a pleasure listening to him enthusiastically answering our curiousities. If you are eager to experience something new, then Sushi Ori is definitely worth a visit.Direction guidance: The restaurant is hidden deep inside of a shared office complex. Google street view will get you to this building. Once inside, continue straight, take the entrance on the right, and keep walking until you find the restaurant's black wall and wooden sliding door.
Nov 05, 2024 · Calvin NewnAbsolutely stunning experience. Michelin guide 2024 recommended. The Omakase was amazing considering the price point and the overall experience fuelled by the interaction with the chef who explained every dish in detail with such enthusiasm and energy. I'll let the pictures hopefully speak for themselves in terms of the variety and presentation. Recommended to book at least in advance (deposit required). Try your best to sit at the sushi bar so that you get the full immersive experience of how the dishes are prepared. A must go and definitely an authentic Japanese dining experience in the heart of KL.
