Windmills

WPG9+XW, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia

3.0
Perhentian islands are the cream of Malaysia. But this windmill spot is the most boring place in these beautiful islands. There is nothing much to do in this place. The only good thing about this trek is that I spotted Pitcher plant which I have never seen before in my life. I have posted a pic of the same. - Salai arun CA

Windmills Introduce

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, a jewel in Terengganu's crown, is rightly celebrated for its dazzling beaches and underwater wonders. Yet, beyond the allure of its turquoise waters, the island offers more to explore for those who love to stretch their legs and seek out panoramic views. Nestled amidst its lush interior is the Windmills viewpoint, a popular trekking destination that provides a different perspective of this beautiful island. For locals in Terengganu looking for a refreshing outdoor activity that combines gentle exercise with rewarding scenery, the hike to the Windmills is a well-known option, offering a chance to see Pulau Perhentian Kecil from a different angle.

The Windmills viewpoint, characterized by its towering wind turbines (though they are now largely a backdrop for the view), has become a quintessential part of the Perhentian experience for many. It's a testament to the island's unique blend of natural beauty and subtle human influence. While it might not offer the dramatic, untouched wilderness of some other treks, it provides an accessible and enjoyable journey to a truly picturesque lookout point. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a pleasant stroll with a great view, the trek to the Windmills offers a memorable slice of Pulau Perhentian Kecil's charm.

Location and Accessibility

The Windmills viewpoint is prominently located on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia, with general coordinates WPG9+XW. To begin your journey to the Windmills, you first need to reach Pulau Perhentian Kecil itself. The main gateway is Kuala Besut Jetty in Terengganu, from where speedboats depart regularly for the island. The boat ride typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes.

Once on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, the Windmills are accessible from a couple of popular points, making it convenient for visitors staying in different areas. You can reach the wind turbines from both Rosemary's (a well-known spot on the island) and Long Beach. While there might not always be explicit "Windmills" signs from every starting point, the general advice is that "all paths going in the general direction, will eventually get you there." From Rosemary's, despite a sign perhaps inaccurately stating "Wind turbines 100m," it is estimated to be closer to 500m. The path, while traversable even with flip-flops in dry conditions, is better navigated with closed shoes, especially if there has been recent rain, as it "gets tricky" and potentially slippery. This relatively straightforward accessibility makes it a popular choice for many island visitors.

  • Self-guided Trekking: The primary "service" is the opportunity for a self-guided hike to the viewpoint, allowing individuals or groups to explore at their own pace.

Features / Highlights

The Windmills viewpoint on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, despite some mixed perceptions, offers several key features and highlights that continue to draw visitors:

  • Iconic Wind Turbines: While perhaps not actively generating power or accessible for close inspection, the presence of the large wind turbines gives the area its distinctive name and a unique landmark quality. They provide an interesting, albeit perhaps "boring" to some, backdrop to the natural views.
  • Accessible Viewpoint: Despite comments about stairs "falling apart and blocked off" in some areas leading to the water, there is still a "viewpoint that has a really nice view" accessible via the paths.
  • Discovery of Unique Flora: For nature enthusiasts, the opportunity to spot unique plant life, such as the Pitcher plant (as mentioned by a reviewer), is a significant highlight and adds an element of natural discovery to the trek.
  • Relatively Easy Trekking: Compared to more challenging jungle treks, the path to the Windmills is generally manageable, even with flip-flops in dry weather, making it accessible to a wider range of fitness levels. This contributes to its popularity.
  • Connectivity: Its accessible trails link to popular areas like Long Beach and Rosemary's, making it a convenient side excursion for those staying nearby.
  • Panoramic Coastal Views: The elevated position offers expansive views of the South China Sea and parts of the island's coastline, which can be particularly stunning during sunrise or sunset.

While some may find "nothing much to do" at the specific spot, the journey and the broad views it affords are the primary attractions, making it a worthy addition to a Perhentian itinerary for many.

Any "promotions" related to visiting the Windmills would likely come from external tour operators on the island who might package a guided trek to the viewpoint with other activities, rather than from the site itself.
